The Democrat flops in governor’s race — and why Eric Swalwell could still play a role (perp still on the ballot)
NY Post ^ | 6/02/26 | Joel Pollak

The field of candidates for governor was once crowded with big-name California Democrats.

By Election Day, it had narrowed to two — Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer — and Republican Steve Hilton.

Each of those three campaigns has a story to tell about its own success.

Becerra will talk about how he overcame “racist” criteria on polling and fundraising to become the first viable Latino candidate for governor (after Eric Swalwell imploded in a sudden sex scandal).

Steyer will talk about how he fought billionaires and special interests — after spending over $200 million of his own money, a record for California (and it was just the primary).

Hilton can justifiably talk about the power of his policy ideas, and the importance of projecting a positive message about the state’s future.

But what about the also-rans?

Several political heavyweights never quite got off the ground.

The most prominent was San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

Mahan had a record of accomplishment to point to, and a giant war chest of Silicon Valley money.

But he entered the race too late, after the field of candidates was already bursting with big-name Democrats.

And his moderate pitch did not appeal to a Democratic Party base that is furious about the Trump presidency and eager to hear more strident voices.

Katie Porter, the former US representative, and a protégée of liberal Senator Elizabeth Warren, was an early front-runner.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The other Democrat was Swalwell.

The disgraced former congressman still appeared on the ballot, because he dropped out too late to take his name off. He will likely win thousands of votes from people who don’t read the news.

That could prove to be a decisive margin in a close-run race.

In a supreme irony, Swalwell could play the spoiler.

Heartbreaking. Truly a shame. Aren't the commies running a nazi as well?

“Becerra will talk about how he overcame “racist” criteria on polling and fundraising to become the first viable Latino candidate for governor”

Ramualdo Pacheco, what we would now call a Latino, was the 12th governor for of California. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good racial narrative

I just voted along with my wife and no $hit, something like 54 Candidates were on the CA. ballot for Gov. No idea who 45 of them were. Come Nov. nothing good will come out of the runoff for Republicans other than that vial pig Katie Porter will still be out of politics.

I voted today and there were over 100 candidates for governor on the ballot. Probably closer to 150. It took the entire first page of the 8x14 ballot. Swallows a lot was the very first name of the first column! The dude had gotten poll position, which I’m sure was completely random. /s And moneybags Steyer was the last name in the last column. Their were 4 or 5 columns of names.

Hilton was a middle name in last column, Blanco was middle Bottom of last column.

The ballot did hose one major Rat candidate, Becerra I believe was listed between Hilton and Blanco in the final column.

Just clicked on ‘all candidates’. That’s a lot. Swalwell’s mugshot is there.

California does a random draw of letter order. This dictates the order names are on the ballot. I looked at the letters a couple of weeks ago. Only thing I remember is Q came up first, S must of been 2nd. But it is not alpha after that, the order of the draw determines the second letter, if there are more than one name starting with S.

They will also need to hide/destroy all of the pre-filled out Eric Swalwell ballots. Since it’s Kalifornia, they no doubt have truckloads of “completed” ballots for every contingency.

Thnx, I knew it was some weird screwy methodology. Do you know if it’s just 26 letters each time they draw or are there multiples of some of the letters based on name distribution?

I assume they had to go to the 2nd or third letter draws for Swallow to have beaten out the other S’s that were running.

It’s still absolutely classic that the lottery winner of 100+ names and one of the most known names going into the race is the dude that was too perverted for even CA Dems to stomach.

They draw all 26 letters in random order. That becomes the new alphabetical order. Not just for the first letter of the name but for all the letters.
