Thousands of tickets remain available for USA World Cup opener vs. Paraguay; Will it sell out?

Thousands of tickets remain unsold for the United States’ high-priced World Cup opener, with data captured by The Athletic and other sources suggesting that the game is not on pace to sell out at current prices and purchasing rates.

As of Thursday evening, two weeks before the 2026 World Cup begins, there were more than 3,500 tickets available on FIFA’s primary portal for the June 12 match between the U.S. and Paraguay.

There were also over 6,500 tickets listed on FIFA’s resale platform, meaning there are over 10,000 tickets available for the match, which was initially billed as one of the tournament’s most attractive games.

The 6,500 (and many more listed on third-party resale sites) are tickets that have been sold or distributed, either to fans or scalpers, but are now being offered to prospective buyers. It’s unclear how many would be used if they don’t re-sell.

The 3,500, on the other hand, have not been sold, and there could be even more not yet listed for sale. FIFA has held back tickets throughout the sales process, and does not publicly reveal sales or availability data.

It’s actually dumb to have the World Cup spread out like it is.

It’s much better when it’s in a relatively small country where the venues are close together.

Funny though, I was a typical kid, never played soccer till college. Discovered I had natural ability at the game, played it until I could not run anymore. If you understand the difficulty level of the game, you may change your mind.

That said, I love traditional football too, (maybe like college ball more than the NFL). As a teacher in HS I coached soccer and also c oached defensive backs and Track and Field,

Coaching soccer was a good job, coaching football got me more support from the school. I also got a referee certificate for college level play in soccer.

Again, I grew up playing football, baseball, cross country, and track. But I had exac tally the right abilities for soccer and ended up on the West coach all college team as a midfielder. I can see how people who don’t know the game feel like people who have posted on this thread. But I also know why it is a big deal in many other countries

“Thousands of tickets remain unsold for the United States’ high-priced World Cup opener”. I would rather pay money to see Caitlin Clark play basketball or Nelly Korda play golf.

Not true. It’s an infrequent game were only one touchdown is scored.
And in any case a touchdown is Not worth 1 point .

Why would the 16th vs 40th ranked teams be considered an attractive match? Neither team is very good, neither team has any chance of going the distance, and sure the game is in America but we no history with Paraguay so it’s got no external interest. This is the problem with how large the WC field is, and how they organized the groups. They specifically avoided all the interesting natural rivalries, and added a bunch of mediocre teams that are destined to go 0-3.

Soccer is too gay for us. The same reason ballet tickets will not sell in Appalachia.

“I’ve been at the World Cup abroad, and there were a ton of Americans there.”

So ten to twenty Americans there?

It’s funny. We have too much leisure time. We can all thank capitalism. Leftists will find plenty of time and things to complain about. Should we all be spending more time doing family stuff?

Will our football take over the world like salsa replacing ketchup?

No. You can fill up a stadium in a huge city like London once or twice a year, largely with ex-patriots. TV ratings for those games are most in the UK (under 1 million). NFL Europe failed. Cities like Charlotte or Jacksonville mean little to most native Europeans. Outside of kickers, there is almost no locally grown talent, so it is like watching the Tampa Bay Lightning knowing that none of the players have a connection with the entire region of the country.

I suspect they're spreading out the spending because in a smaller area, too many people couldn't afford to attend enough games to fill the venues.
