For many millennials, the economy can feel like a game of musical chairs where previous generations already grabbed the seats, refinanced them at 3% interest and now insist there are still plenty left if younger people would just "budget better." Somewhere along the way, the American dream started feeling less like a finish line and more like one of those carnival games rigged just enough to keep people throwing money at it.
That frustration spilled into Reddit's r/economy subreddit when one millennial who grew up in the 1990s posted a blunt message about the growing disconnect between younger Americans and boomers over money, housing and financial expectations.
"I'm a millennial who grew up in the 90s and what boomers don't understand about us is that we're working three times as hard for a third of what they had at our age," the Redditor wrote. "And the milestones they want us to hit weren't postponed by laziness, they were priced out of reach by the economy they voted for."

Boomers privatized the social benefits and socialized the costs of those social benefits unto other people, primarily their children and grandchildren.
Their children and grandchildren will know nothing but paying the interest on the debt with no benefits for themselves.
For all my faults in life, I am thankful that this is not one fault I have to face God with come Judgement.
“I know the article posted is about a Millennial’s comment but GenZ has been hit the hardest by what the Boomers have done.”
Claims without any evidence is just political posturing to buy favor with some demographic versus another.
“It used to be what can you do for your grandchildren but we see in this generation what can your grandchildren do for you?”
NONSENSE!! Who invents this crap!!
“The fact is that it is quite unfair for GenZ and Millennials to have to subsidize the largess of the Boomers”
And just how are any generations subsidizing the “largess of the boomers”, and whatever “the boomers” have how is it they did not earn it????
Would love to see the charitable giving per age group charts. Not just money, but time.
I think the non-boomers would be embarrassed.
I feel dumber after reading this, what a stupid article about Reddit w/o any real facts.
And they (and some here) will claim this is the Boomer’s fault.
Screw you guys. We did it right, and reaped the rewards. If life sucks for GenZers. well then you can just embrace the suck.
If you’re working three jobs, just to pay the rent, you’re not going to have time to be charitable.
Driving up the debt from $1 trillion in 1980 to nearly $40 trillion is doing it right?
Who’s doing the measuring on that?
A consequence of breaking up the nuclear family, and extended families, who looked out for each other across generations.
Now everybody is on their own. But mom and dad in an old folks home when they get too old, so they can continue to party it up.
Im a boomer. In the 1990s, in the Information Technology area I was in, I had some weeks, without “overtime pay” where I worked 50, 60 and even 70 hours a week, sometimes “at the job” more than 24 hrs in a stretch.
Apparently too many “Gen Zers” and millennials have been fed a lot of class envy propaganda about “boomers”.
and letting 100 million illegals invade and steal all the decent jobs that didn’t require a 100K degree like construction jobs.
“But often times we hear boomers mocking younger generations and bragging about how they’re spending all their money so their kids won’t get any inheritance and things like that.”
It’s a joke. Boomers love their children and will be leaving them with an inheritance far greater than they received.
Back in the 60’s it was common to see such signs on campers and motor home BRFORE boomers had drivers’ licenses.
Millenials are expected to be the wealthiest of all time inheriting over $50 trillion from their evil parents.
Absolutely.
It basically comes down to, imo, of not loving your neighbour (which includes relatives and descendants and fellow citizens) to want to protect them.
A lack of empathy, basically.
Except that these young people all seem to vote Democrat.
Some folks need to understand the difference between one's needs and wants.
One can eat out several times a week, or cook at home for a tenth of the cost.
Four bucks for a coffee on the run, or make a thermos at home for 50 cents.
A new BMW versus a ten-year old Chevy.
The list goes on and on.
We see them all the time - crying about not having enough money but spending lavishly. God wants us to be good stewards with the finances He provides for us - He will not honor wastefulness.
Agreed
“But often times we hear boomers mocking younger generations and bragging about how they’re spending all their money so their kids won’t get any inheritance and things like that. There is a def. generational rift.”
Rift? Yhat money spent supports the jobs that the younger generations are working. Would you rather the boomers not spend and have those jobs dry up?
” ... the driving force behind the US economy more likely lies in the spending habits of older Americans specifically, who are doing well enough to both prop up the economy and extend financial help to their younger kids and relatives.”
Similar here. Older GenX and busted my ass to get to where I am —and today its obvious I lived far better in the mid-late 90’s on less than half what I make now—its not even close
The Federal Reserve FRED data on inflation-adjusted real wages goes back to 1979, and if you look at that data closely, what this person is saying pretty clearly isn’t true.
total hogwash ... as a boomer, i worked my ass off, starting the minute i graduated from high school: worked construction during summers and holiday breaks through out undergraduate school [starting minimum wage at the time was $1.25/hour] ... worked as research/teaching assistant during graduate degree ... worked after that until had to retire prematurely at the turn of the century due to health ... probably worked myself too hard ...
Why are you promoting toxicity?
