Millennial Who Grew Up In The 1990s Says Boomers Don't Understand 'We're Working 3 Times As Hard For A Third Of What They Had At Our Age'
Yahoo finance ^

For many millennials, the economy can feel like a game of musical chairs where previous generations already grabbed the seats, refinanced them at 3% interest and now insist there are still plenty left if younger people would just "budget better." Somewhere along the way, the American dream started feeling less like a finish line and more like one of those carnival games rigged just enough to keep people throwing money at it.

That frustration spilled into Reddit's r/economy subreddit when one millennial who grew up in the 1990s posted a blunt message about the growing disconnect between younger Americans and boomers over money, housing and financial expectations.

"I'm a millennial who grew up in the 90s and what boomers don't understand about us is that we're working three times as hard for a third of what they had at our age," the Redditor wrote. "And the milestones they want us to hit weren't postponed by laziness, they were priced out of reach by the economy they voted for."

Yeah, Mcpain is (was) one of the very few that I actually did take time to provide with my opinion. Like a dog on a bone, I was.. He wasn't my representative, but I just couldn't hold it back...

“Boomers are the hardest working most deserving people ever!”

And we didn’t whine about it.

In the early 2000s, DH had to hire recent PhD grads in Physics and Engineering for his department of a DOD contractor.

His stories were hilarious. One weenie asked, with a whine in his voice, “Would I really have to work 40 hours a week?”

DH: “If your lucky you’ll ONLY work 40 hours a week.”

Kid didn’t take the job. It sounded haaard. 😫

I was referring to the Federal Reserve Act and then Nixon taking us off the gold standard.

Individual items have gone up more while OTHERS went DOWN! My first computer was a $2500 Apple 2GS. Gasoline is about 4 times what I paid in 1980. Until very recently, hamburger was about 3 times what I paid in the 70s. The new truck I bought last year was $45k vs 6k in 1980 - about in line with average inflation although it easily outperforms my 1980 truck. I bought Lee jeans for $27 last winter. Think they were around $10 when I was in college.

Stop whining. I couldn’t buy a house until I was 40. My son works with 20ish coworkers and is appalled at their lack of work ethic and wasteful spending. I worked 12 hour days. Feel free to do likewise. Do without until you can afford something - and I have NEVER bought a $4 cup of coffee.

Your first sentence is exactly what I said.

Your second sentence is what I consider blatant absurdity.

So I guess you believe it’s ‘absurd’ to study the past, study how conditions and attitudes came to be, why people desired and performed as they did, and to learn from all of that. We shouldn’t even invent terms like ‘boomer’ to refer to times and conditions.

None of us lives in a vacuum. We’re all affected by the social, political and economic conditions in which we grow up. It’s just natural that generations are going to face different conditions, and BE different.

But I guess you believe that none of that has meaning...

The fact is that it is quite unfair for GenZ and Millennials to have to subsidize the largess of the Boomers”

*****

Boy, if that isn’t twisting things around….

Subsidizing “largess”…..

WHAT LARGESS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE? First of all, I wouldn’t consider what we get on SS as “largess”. SS isn’t even keeping up with inflation, because not only does Congress not give us an honest adjustment for inflation, they’ve had a lot to do with causing it in the first place.

Work two jobs if you have to, even if you have to compete with foreigners for that extra job and QUIT WHINING. We put money into SS- actually, no- Congress stole it from us and squandered it- largely the Democrats’ fault. The Democrats had control of Congress for 40 years, from 1954 to 1994, when the so-called “Republican Revolution” temporarily brought some semblance of sanity back to Washington, but that didn’t last long. Democrats, along with “RINOS”, eventually started the “spend spend spend” cycle again and awaaaay we went back to kicking the can back down the road for future generations to deal with.

If you “Gen Xers” want to blame ANYONE, blame THEM, not us.

“Largess”, my ass….

"Impressive!"

Thanks!! I really enjoyed the class room experience in college. When I was going to school at night, the courses were only for adults, people who worked during the day, and couldn't attend then. No day students were allowed in those classes back then. Made the courses far more interesting because the people there were older, and took the classes seriously. No youngsters to disrupt.

But often times we hear boomers mocking younger generations and bragging about how they’re spending all their money so their kids won’t get any inheritance and things like that.

They’re hearing boomers saying that? Where are they hearing that? SITE SOME EXAMPLES…wow…

When I was 55 I took classes in Medical Terminology, Transcription, etc., at night after work.

It was hard to get back into the studying mode, but I kicked butt. (I wouldn’t do it again, though.)
