"Colorado and California are moving towards exempting open-source operating systems and software distributions from proposed operating-system-level age verification laws, offering a significant regulatory win for the Linux and broader open-source ecosystem.
Colorado’s bill, which has already reached its “Final Act” stage, explicitly excludes software distributed under licences that allow users to copy, redistribute, and modify software without platform-imposed technical or contractual restrictions. The law is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2028."
Snip...
"The proposed California language states that an “operating system provider” does not include entities distributing software under licences permitting users to “copy, redistribute, and modify” the software.
The wording suggests regular Linux distributions would likely avoid mandatory age verification requirements, while proprietary ecosystems such as Windows and Valve’s SteamOS-based hardware could still fall within the legislation due to proprietary software components."

Picking winners and losers. Economic success depends on whether the politicians like you or not. That’s what government is for, right?
Given that both states are now totally corrupted by DemocRAT “leadership”, one knows that they want such because they are enemies of the United States and want to continue the leftification (e.g., stupiedification) of our children. Not even close to kidding. These bottom-dwellers are untrustworthy, and their mothers wear combat boots and nose rings.
Lefty kids need their porn!
Who goes to jail?

Smells like....Fascism!
Why should it matter whether the software is OS or not? If they’re going to apply age verification requirements, they should do it equally. Of course, being Democrat collectivists, they would probably want to exempt the “free” software, as opposed to the “monthly fee”, for-profit software. Communism: everything’s free! Wheeeeeeeeeee!
So idiotic. Linux?? My son was coding at age 12 in C, Python and Java, for his first science fair.
Meta and Porn sites want this age verification moved over to operating systems ,the pile of scum
Clarence Darrow, the radical leftist lawyer of his time, over one hundred years ago realized that there were so many laws on the books and court case precedents he could cite, for whatever legal position he wanted to argue, and easily constuct a persuasive brief however absurd the case. Politicians use the same technique via the convoluted laws and bureacracies they have created to interfere with almost any business or human endeavor. Conservatives have rightly recognized that this is the curse of big government.
California State Rep., Scott Wiener, voted for the “Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043)” act, which tells you it is NOT going to protect children from perverts like Scott Wiener.
They want web and software services to know the age of the user, which would allow them to target kids.
I hope I misread some of the comments on this thread, which seem to take the “govern me harder, daddy” approach.
Those who insist on Bubble Wrap will eventually smother themselves from the sheer amount of Bubble Wrap.
Exactly.
That is why I said no more to Windows 11 and went with a Thinkpad 410 running Linux.
(Began with win3.0, finished with win10.)
Linux Mint is enough of ‘windoze’, to make the jump, and for just all the stuff retirees do, no need to get fancy. It’s there if you need it,, and still runs well.
The 410 still has ‘keys” for their keyboard, not buttons.
Yep, this is a ridiculously stupid idea. You can tell that the politicians who authored this idiocy don’t know squat about software.
