ClickUp Just Replaced Hundreds of Employees With 3,000 AI Agents

Project management software company ClickUp laid off 22% of its workforce, replacing hundreds of employees with roughly 3,000 internal AI agents in what CEO Zeb Evans called “a full embrace of AI-driven productivity.”

Evans announced the cuts on X, framing them not as a cost-cutting measure but as a structural transformation. Remaining employees now direct AI agents to handle complex tasks and review their output rather than performing the work themselves. Evans described his goal as turning ClickUp into a “100x org.”

The company, last valued at $4 billion in 2021, recently deployed the 3,000 AI agents across internal operations. Evans said most savings from the restructuring will flow back to employees who stay. He also announced million-dollar salary bands for workers who deliver outsized impact using AI.

“The people that automate their jobs with AI will always have a job,” he wrote.

ClickUp’s move reflects a broader trend, but the results across the industry are mixed. A recent Gartner survey found that roughly 80% of companies using autonomous AI technology have cut jobs. However, those workforce reductions are not translating into meaningful financial returns, according to the same study. Gartner’s findings suggest some companies use unproven AI as an excuse to downsize rather than as a genuine productivity driver.

ClickUp maintains it is measuring real productivity gains internally and plans to package those efficiencies into a forthcoming product for its own customers. Evans also pushed back on the practice of “tokenmaxxing,” where companies monitor employee AI token consumption as a productivity metric. He said ClickUp instead measures value created and time saved rather than token spend.

ClickUp is not the only company redefining what a workforce looks like. Intuit announced it will lay off over 3,000 employees to refocus on AI. Meanwhile, startup Polsia operates with just one employee, its founder, and recently raised $30 million at a $250 million valuation by running all software operations through AI automation.

Great! But if everyone gets laid off in favor of AI, who buys your product?

AI Overview

ClickUp is an all-in-one productivity and project management platform designed to centralize your work. It replaces multiple separate apps—like Trello, Slack, Google Docs, and Zoom—by combining task management, team chat, documentation, whiteboards, and goal tracking into a single, highly customizable workspace.

Am I the only pone who finds this spread of AI alarming?

Needed to renew my driving license recently. The lady helping me was taking ages. She finely had to hand me over to a colleague. Her terminal would not 'believe' that she was not a robot!

For the past few years I've really wanted to update a 50-year-old software utility (cscope) to have a different set of features more suited to modern times, but I've never had the time. I'm sure I would have taken at last a couple of weeks to make the changes I wanted, but I never had two weeks to give.

Last night I had Claude assist me in making those updates, and finally I have my nice, new tool with only about 2.5 hrs of work invested.

What I found must interesting is how Claude went about it. It spun up a dedicated container for my project and, from that container, cloned the source project from GitHub and made and tested the changes I described, before delivering a new package to me.

It was a very nice experience, and I got something I wanted for a long time.

For those interested in the details of the changes, the 1970's 'cscope' tool was made specifically for editing C source code, however it is very powerful at quickly navigating through potentially hundreds of files and jumping into the editor. I wanted to reclaim all that screen real estate for showing more search matches, and I also wanted a case-insensitive search that could search on multiple strings.

To run in classic 'cscope' mode, one simply types the cscope command as usual. To run the new features one runs it as 'gscope' (which is symlinked to cscope) and the change in the program name triggers to alternate behavior.

I’ve been using Claude Code in the Mac Terminal to write three hobbyist programs to assist with health tracking. It is remarkable what you can do. I’ve got CLAUDE.md, DEVELOPMENT_LOG.md, and PROJECT_STATUS.md files to make it easy to jump back in and pick up where we left off.

It would have taken me years to write these from scratch.

Claude likes to pat me on the back. It says I’m better than most professional developers it assists.

Project management is one that can easily be replaced via an AI algorithm. Enter in the resources, enter in the goals, enter in the deadlines and a simple AI script can organize it all.

RE: When can I see an AI doctor?

On a discussion show on the radio they said many doctors are already secretly using AI for all their patients coming into the office. They can’t resist the temptation.

I remember not that many years go when the doctor stopped flipping chart pages and jotting down things and ALWAYS sat with a laptop in front, staring at it 90% of the time with a few quick glances at me.

One reason is only Obamacare system recorded input of medical conditions can be charged to the health plans as office visit and treatment and Rx.
