Crews responding to the chemical emergency at a Southern California aerospace facility discovered what officials described as a possible crack in the unstable tank that may be relieving pressure inside the vessel.
In a video update posted to social media Sunday, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief T.J. McGovern said specialized teams entered the hazard zone late Saturday night on a reconnaissance mission and visually identified what appeared to be a crack in the tank at the center of the crisis.
"What they found was a potential crack in the tank, which could potentially be relieving some of the pressure in there," McGovern said.
Officials are now working to confirm the discovery, which McGovern said could change the strategy for managing the incident.
Authorities previously warned the deteriorating tank could either rupture and spill thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals or explode during a "thermal runaway" event, potentially triggering neighboring tanks and creating a wider disaster.
More than 40,000 residents remain under evacuation orders as officials continue monitoring temperatures, air quality and structural conditions around the facility.

Gee, multiple wildfires, chemical emergencies.... could an earthquake be far behind?
If I didn't know better I'd say California was cursed.....but that can't be......can it? 🤔

A “potential” crack? It either is or it ain’t.
Crack is like alcohol. It’s either the problem or it’s the cure.
50,000 eople forced out of their homes, for who knows how long, with nothing being done.
They'll figure out a plan in another month or so...
Why can’t they empty the tank? I assumed it was filled, somehow.
Considering it might explode, I assume it’s too dangerous.
They said a valve was stuck.
If a crack let out some pressure that the valve couldn’t, maybe that is good.
Send in a robot.
Tap into the stuff.
Flow it out.
howsabout a couple M855 holes thru the top?
I was in the aviation field for almost 40 years.
Where I worked we audited and preventive maintenanced that place within an inch of it’s life.
Theres the distinct possibility someone signed of on inspections and didn’t actually do them.

The current evacuation zone. The boundaries obviously set to make it simple to know if you are in the zone or not.
