Inside story: Iran-US deal takes shape but thorniest contentions lie ahead

A draft framework for a potential comprehensive agreement between Iran and the United States is circulating among negotiating parties, according to multiple regional sources briefed on the talks. If finalized, the proposal would mark the most significant diplomatic step since the Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that halted nearly six weeks of war—a conflict that began on Feb. 28 with Israel’s killing of then-supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint attack on high-ranking officials and vital sites across Iran.

The draft framework, as described to Amwaj.media by Arab and Iranian sources, includes an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, the release of several billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of the US naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American forces from the immediate vicinity of Iran. Subsequently, the parties would have 30 days to agree on the nuclear issue, with the possibility of an extension of talks by mutual agreement.

Two annexes, one framework

The architecture of the nascent agreement is more complex than a single document. According to a source familiar with the structure, the details President Donald Trump has referenced publicly relate to two separate understandings that will be attached as annexes to the main memorandum of understanding. Negotiations on those annexes, the source said, remain active.

Importantly, the sequencing matters. Financial and security provisions appear designed to create enough mutual interest — sanctions relief, military de-escalation and a reopened Strait of Hormuz —to bring both sides into the nuclear negotiations with something concrete to lose.

Somewhat confirmation that the 'deal' includes nothing but 'hope' for negotiations re nuclear material.

Deja vu? /s

I am curious what the author claims our side has to lose in negotiations. It's an odd statement considering that apparently in the eyes of some in the region the US has lost face despite holding most all of the important cards...

All these different stories claim to have the ‘inside scoop’ on the ‘deal’, but they are all different. Sounds like a leak trap.................

The only way to deal with these people is to put them in the ground. It’s the only language they understand and will ever understand.

“includes an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, the release of several billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of the US naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American forces from the immediate vicinity of Iran.”

A list of Iranian wants, with nothing for the USA.

We should refuse to talk to Iran unless Iran hands over some 15%+ U-235 enriched uranium, perhaps 10kg of U-235 worth at a minimum.

The Iranians need to understand:
1. Israeli warplanes can fly missions to Iran and return home
2. thousands of killer drones can be controlled via Starlink
3. after most protective Iranian troops are killed off by the warplanes and drones, Israeli commandos can go to work.

There’s little need for boots on the ground when Starlink drones can kill from the sky.

Ukraine has killed thousands of Russian soldiers using drones.

Sounds like a updated version of Giulio Douhet’s claim made in 1921 that the future of war was strategic air power. Armies, navies not needed.

Color me very skeptical!
