Fla. woman, 50, ‘ripped apart’ by neighbors’ pit bulls, who were known to terrorize the neighborhood

A 50 year-old Florida woman was viciously mauled to death by a pair of bloodthirsty pit bulls, only to be found by her heartbroken husband who said he’ll “never get the image out of my mind.”

Donnell Smith returned to his Brevard County home shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday — after helping neighbors across the street — and noticed his wife, Jodi Cowan, and their small dog had disappeared, according to WESH 2 News.

Smith then suddenly heard Cowan’s cries for help in the distance, the outlet reported.

“I saw the silhouette of the two dogs dragging my wife down the road, off into the grass in front of the truck down there,” Smith said.

Cowan was found lying on the grass in a pool of blood with dog bites all over her body, her husband said.

The beasts — who live in the neighborhood and were known to terrorize the community — apparently returned and tried to drag Cowan away again.

“I pulled my knife out, you know, just swinging it with one hand and holding the blood with the other, trying to stop her from bleeding,” a distraught Smith said...

“They must have been chasing our little dog, and she went to save her little dog to get him,” he said.

The grieving husband claimed the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office were aware of the pit bulls past terrorizing the neighborhood — but never did anything about them...

Neighbors told FOX35 that the pit bulls were frequently left outside and had previously attacked passersby.

One resident said they had been previously trapped in their vehicle for 30 minutes while the duo surrounded their vehicle. Another neighbor recently called animal control with concerns and even bought pepper spray for protection.

As a ten year-old, I watched as a Cocker Spanial was killed by a Boxer. As a 12 year-old, a German Shepard jumped out of a car, ran across the road and sank a canine tooth into my shoulder. As a 60 year-old, I was first threatened by GS-sized mutt—then bitten on the leg. No tag on the collar!

I still loved the eight mini-Dachshunds I’ve owned over my lifetime. :)

You are right. And my memory is that the prosecutor was a young lawyer named Gavin Newsome assisted by Kimberly Guilfoyle.

“ Even on neighborhood walks I’m carrying a 9mm”
When it absolutely positively has to be killed, only a .357 magnum does it, every single time.

Isn't a shotgun best?

Not everyone can aim steady when being charged by a savage beast, mush less several.

You can never trust a dog.

No matter how many times the owner says they are “good dogs who would never attack anyone”.

When I was a kid around 12 - 13 years old I got seriously attacked several times by “good dogs” allowed to roam free.

In later years, when visiting friends for the first time, they told us not to be concerned about their their pet pit bull who was a “good dog who never attacked anyone”.

No sooner had they said that when their “good dog” lunged at our our pre-teen son who was just quietly standing there and missed ripping his face off by a hair’s breadth.

I never trust any dog - especially large ones and most of all, Pit Bulls!

Indeed. I once overheard a conversation about an event at a yard sale. The person who was there said a mixed breed dog, part pit bull, attacked a baby in a stroller, and ripped off part of the child's face. I don't know if the child survived or if the dog was terminated, nor do I know if the dog's owners had to pay major compensation to the child's parents and/or faced criminal charges, but I sure hope so.

I didn't press the guy who saw the event for details, he was obviously upset by it.

Don’t care, pit bulls need to be removed from the planet. There I said it!

Love seeing my daughter out walking our sweet infant grandchild in the stroller, with her ever-watchful South Carolina all black pit mix right by their side (71% pit, 17% Staffordshire, 12% lab). That dog truly considers herself part of the family pack — she’s happiest when she’s close to her people.
We’re constantly having to gently push her away because she wants to lick everyone’s faces nonstop! She has to be near one of us at all times, and when strangers approach she is tightly leashed for everyone’s comfort. But she’s such a good girl — professionally command-trained and well-socialized around both people and other dogs from early on. She’s as protective as she is loving.

Letting a dangerous dog roam is hardly different from shooting into a crowd

They already killed a human being. lt isn’t prejudice when it is after the fact, it is an accurate description, though redundant.

Blah blah blah. Same sh** different day, and the usual suspects come out with their nonsense.

It’s the owner, not the breed.

I was told when I had my rottweiler that she would turn on me and kill my daughter. My rottie passed away peacefully almost 20 years ago, while my (still non deceased daughter) and I sobbed over her in a vet’s office. She was a purebred show dog, a Texas prom queen, and ravaged by cancer.

Did I say she fought a bear once to protect myself and my daughter. Yeah... she did.

Ironic, since her name was Ursa.

Was always told that she, and then her successor, a Doberman, would turn on us and kill us. They never did.

The only dog that ever bit me was our Walker Hound rescue... he was a jerk.

Blah blah blah. You get the feral hood rats and their tiny-schween compensation dogs, not AKC bred/trained show dogs. Blame the ghetto trash and their spawn. It’s THEM, Boo Boo.
It’s ALWAYS them.

My vet will not treat pit bulls or mixed pit bull dogs and claims internal studies are clear. He believes they are generally sociopathic dogs raised and trained by antisocial human beings, which is a dangerous mix.

They should have never been allowed to run free. When I used to run, there were a few areas where some dogs would get a bit menacing. One time an owner was watching as his dog ran into the road and was snarling at me. I told him to control his dog and he just looked at me. I pulled my weapon and told him, “last chance” - you never saw someone move so fast to control their animal. I notified him that the next time the dog left the yard when I was going by, I would just take care of it and he could bury it wherever he wanted. I never had a problem with that dog again.
