President Donald Trump is championing the prospect of putting the kibosh on twice-annual clock changes by making daylight saving time permanent.
A bill to make daylight saving time permanent has been folded into a larger measure that the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced in a 48-1 vote on Thursday.
"Big Vote today (48-1!) in the Energy and Commerce Committee on a Bill including The Sunshine Protection Act, which will be making Daylight Saving Time Permanent! This is so important in that Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks. Many of these Clocks are located in Towers, and the cost of renting, or using, Heavy Equipment to do this twice a year is prohibitive!" Trump wrote in a Thursday Truth Social post.
"It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!" the president declared.
Rep. Vern Buchanan's, R-Fla., office noted in a Thursday press release that "The Sunshine Protection Act was included as a provision within an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute (AINS) to the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act, which was marked up and sent to the House floor by the House Energy and Commerce Committee today."
The push is actually bipartisan.
"The legislation has 32 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, and Senate companion legislation (S. 29) introduced by Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has 18 bipartisan cosponsors," Buchanan's release noted.

Yes, no permanent DST, only permeant ST
I didn’t know bees lived by clocks.
Days naturally get longer in the Summer because of the tilt of the Earth. But that’s a separate thing from our manipulation of clocks.
Don’t care which one one whit. Just pick one and leave it alone. The amount of sunshine remains the same of course. How much you experience is up to you. Kids at dark bus stops? It was almost always dark when I walked down one hill and up another, half the 3/8 mile along a highway. The sun was just peaking up a lot of mornings and it was dang cold.
Heck, I’m not sure how many kids ride the bus these days anyway. Most look empty and the line of cars at the school gets longer all the time.
Like Iran
Now that I’m retired it makes no difference to me. But back when I worked, I liked the extra light at the end of my work day. Then I could do things with the kids or work around the house.
My vote is for standard time.
It seems that I recall a wise man (possibly an American Indian) who said ‘only the White man will cut a part of a blanket off, sew it on the other end, and declare the blanket longer’.
Stay on Standard time, that’s why it is called standard.
Saving daylight is a scam, dark mornings are dangerous and changing hours for school is the same crap only backwards and more confusing.
In winter months the sun comes up late enough without shoving another hour in in front of it.
Stupid people who can’t get up with the sun should not get help at the expense of those that desire to do so year round and not be subsidizing a 9am job sporting late to bedder afternoon go getter.
We should permanently adopt standard time, not daylight saving time.
Yeah, that’s the first thing I thought about. 🙄
Why even say that?
I live in Alaska, so I’m pretty familiar with doing things in the dark. I’m 65 but I remember the same thing. Like you said, dark go home or when you hear the dinner bell ringing. ;)
A buddy went there...said he watched the sun go up and down while he was eating breakfast. Does that sound right??
Congress outdid themselves....they changed when the sun rises and sets by changing their watch. How stupid are they. Of course, on DST, the sun will no longer be overhead at noon.
Unless you rely on a sundial to tell time, does it really matter?
That is a perfect solution.
Ha ha. That would be a little further north than us. Wintertime here on the Kenai peninsula, the sun comes up around 10:00 and sets about 3pm at solstice time.
I went without a watch for a whole year. It’s pretty easy to tell time by the sun. I was living in Va at the time.
I have watches, but have rarely ever worn them. We have a clock at home, and I learned from my Granny to always keep it 10 minutes fast.
I’m never late :-)
This is a verrrry horrid idea. Scrap DST or keep it for June through October only. It does not save energy and creates dangerous conditions for school children because of the late sunrises during certain months.
With their bodies.
