Employees might take less time off

I always thought HR were the guidance counselors of the corporate world. In my high school experience, these were former teachers who were not competent enough to teach at the low bar set for public schools so they made them guidance counselors. In the corporate world these are people not able to do any other job other than the nothing they accomplish in HR.

Going out on a limb here, but my guess is that HR was following the law - state and federal, and there are plenty of laws to navigate. HR problems get expensive quickly because plaintiffs’ attorneys can get fees which are disproportionate to the harm done when they are successful. There is a big incentive for plaintiffs’ lawyers to take on employment cases for even small infractions like I-9 violations, minimum wage claims, discrimination, civil rights claims, and disability claims, just to name a few. HR did not make the laws, but I am suspicious that HR staff was just trying to follow them to protect the company.

In attempting to become ISO 9000 compliant the cerifying company took forever knit picking everything for months.
After certification it was the same deal....they would ALWAYS something to pick at no matter how minor.

I look up a company on LinkedIn. I run through their employees who opened a LinkedIn page. I am interested in the career path of potential co-workers.
I note many, many, many brown CFO or Vice Presidents have hired brown direct reports.
Those workplaces are not diverse, per LinkedIn data
same here...50 years in the IT workforce, the biggest A-holes in the company were in HR...don’t know if the stuff they do is mandated from on high, or if they are just woke power trippers (probably this)

yeah my wife’s company came out with ‘unlimited PTO’ policy a while back... turns out you still had to have management approval to take any time off, which may or may not be given; they have less time off than before
“Unlimited PTO” is always a lie. Smart employees usually take whatever the limit used to be and use that as their guideline.
Inevitably management winds up having to put something in place to manage time off, usually they just use how much time people take off as a ranking system and get rid of the ones not meeting whatever unstated expectation management actually has.
I always go with the principle of “it’s work, it’s supposed to suck.” That is keeping your expectations as low as possible while being there as much as possible while caring as little as possible leads to the most job security and satisfaction.
I’ve always found HR to be fat mean women, generally black.
Hired so that when a minority is fired for cause it’s harder to sue.
I was asked to interview candidates for my group. None of the candidates were qualified. All had BAs and MAs, and could speak the latest product development jargon, but none had hands-on or technical knowledge required to design, prototype, test, or support production.
The job posting from the HR group was some compilation of requirements that they had assembled. I had some of my most productive people review the posting, and they all laughed… It didn’t describe characteristics of a successful employee. It described a meeting attender, paper-pusher that we would have to train from scratch. Everybody needs training, but these people were babes in the woods.
I told HR that I was going to write the posting, and they objected, and explained their hiring goals. Their goals don’t provide employees that will succeed, but they do keep HR (now called People Services) busy.
Watching the AWFLs crash out on LinkedIn over his decision is making my morning coffee taste way better.
