Mayor Zohran Mamdani boasted Thursday that the Big Apple will hold a lottery for 1,000 discounted FIFA World Cup tickets for lucky winners – after the city kicked-in $90 million for the tournament.
The tickets will be $50 for those lucky enough to win the pitch, coming with free round-trip bus rides to the matches in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, Mamdani announced during an event in Harlem.
The soccer-loving socialist made a show of contending no taxpayer money directly went toward the low-cost tickets – an assertion that quickly had insiders crying foul.
“FIFA will be raking in billions with this World Cup, thanks in part to the largesse of New York City taxpayers, and in return they give us a measly 1,000 low-cost tickets?” said David Carr (R-Staten Island), the minority leader for the City Council.
“I think the Mayor shanked that one.”
Everything about the World Cup has come with a hefty price tag for the trifecta of New York City, New York and New Jersey that’s hosting the soccer spectacle.

I don’t care what others think about us. I care what I think about us.
This is p!$$poor planning on so many levels. It embarrasses me.
P.S. Your he-man ads are getting old. You ought to come up with something new.
I really hope so. I hope our team loses badly. I want soccer gone. Like disco.
BRIBERY SEEMS TO BE HIS MIDDLE NAME
Our team is horrible and if we make it to the Round of 16, I’ll be surprised.
Keep wishing and hoping for the disco stuff. Maybe it’ll happen.
Bread and circuses for useful idiots.
Why should we be embarrassed? I'll go to a World Cup game if I can buy a ticket under $100.
But no, FIFA is trying to rip us off.
They can do that in NYC and LA.
But Kansas City?
Tickets to MLS games fir the cheap seats start around $50 each, but secondary market is around $30.
FIFA is trying to rip us off, that’s true.
I’m embarrassed that we resort to playing Worl Cup soccer on a crappy pro football field, and not a soccer pitch, for the sole reason of greed. I hope the NFL stadium stands are empty.
IMHO, we should be playing the games at the 20K - 28K sized stadiums that we have for MLS. These places would be packed, sellouts every time, driving ticket prices up.
They made the ticket prices way too high. In my mind, this is a disaster waiting to happen. Ludicrous.
100% guaranteed. Tickets soon to be available for $2500 from said cronies.
God forbid he’d spend the $90 mil on police or fire or anything.
Mamdani quietly attends Knicks game — sitting in section where tickets cost around $700 or more
Say you win the privilege to buy a single $50 ticket.
Are you expected to attend by yourseld?
What if you what to take a girlfriend of your children. Do you get to sit together?
Asking for a friend

Yeah - that’s exactly what NY citizens need.....

Vicarious embarrassment is when we can imagine ourselves in that embarrassing situation, and our ability to mentally take the place of the person who is actually in that situation is enough to spark the same physical reaction in us, regardless of whether we know the person or not. And the more empathetic a person you are, ultimately, the stronger this reaction tends to be.
I have zero of this feeling in this situation. Just like I had zero vicarious embarrassment when Obama or Biden were in the WH. I have nothing to do with the World Cup, FIFA, the planning and marketing effort to bring it to America, or soccer in general, or anyone or anything associated with that sport.
If it is a major success or a colossal disaster, I’ll drink my coffee and move on. Not my boat, not my charter.
Now, I understand pride in being an American, and being a fan of a sports club. But the World Cup or the “us” in this context is even more removed - it is a logistical matter, not even the matches or players. We are talking about the event planner…akin to whoever is setting up for a Taylor Swift concert in a baseball park, or coordinating a wedding reception in a ballroom, or a tech bro conference at a convention center. I have even LESS vicarious emotion with that logistical dimension.
Emotions are an effeminate vs masculine trait. There is a time and a place for emotions, like seeing your child get married or bringing your wife home after a successful medical recovery. The impending planning drama of the World Cup 2026 doesn’t rise to that level.
I’m sure my husband isn’t embarrassed by this, but I guess, since I am a woman, that might explain some of it.
I’m not at all invested in a Taylor Swift anything, but I do enjoy soccer.
I think it’s a little funny that you went to the effort of looking up why people might be embarrassed, and not just for your own info, but to share. That’s probably me just being effeminate again. Good thing I’m a female.
Except for New York and Los Angeles, they should do that anyway because they're selling tickets for one grand each.
IMHO, we should be playing the games at the 20K - 28K sized stadiums that we have for MLS.
We’ve got high school stadiums here in Texas that can accomodate that.
Are those soccer specific stadiums for HS? If so, that’s pretty cool.
They should. MLS will be taking a break during the WC, so it’s not like there will be scheduling conflicts.
This was p*$$poor planning on the part of FIFA, and I’ll go there, MLS. It could be so much better, but the grifters at FIFA are just a bunch of corrupt losers.
The real moneymaker is all those luxury boxes.
