Might have been founded because of Islam. The overland merchants who were bringing goods from CHYNA were getting slaughtered by Muslims. The European armies protecting them were slaughtered too. They had to find another route. This created the great sailors, Magellan, Vasco DeGama, etc. Columbus was going another way when he came upon a different continent.
