N.Y.C. Hotel Housekeepers Will Earn Over $100,000 Under New Contract
New York Times ^ | 5/18/26 | Patrick McGeehan

The average pay of housekeepers in New York City hotels will increase to more than $100,000 a year as part of a contract settlement between an industry trade group and a powerful union. The deal, which the group ratified on Monday, averts a threatened strike this summer that could have disrupted the influx of tourists expected for the World Cup and America 250 festivities.

The owners of nearly 250 hotels in the city reached agreement with the union, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, on an eight-year contract that would more than double base wages for workers, union officials said. The hotel owners will continue to pay the full cost of providing health-care benefits for 27,000 union members and their families.

With coming free groceries, health care and bus rides.

Socialist workers’ utopia.

They wish they could vote for Mamdani again. What a guy.
Will have to wait for Newsom in a couple of years.

Showing my age here, I know, but I remember when making a six figure salary required a skill, trade or profession. I also remember when that was a lot of money.

A self hlep guru once explained how the seemingly unfair system allowing the lowest paid maintenance man to make some small amount relative the highest paid CEO and CFO on the top floor of the skyscraper.

He said the amount of value to the company varies with each level of employment. Keeping the place clean by housekeepers and the HVAC and door hinges and electrical system working has value. But choosing the products to market or the advertising to buy may make or break a fortune, so the work by the people in charge is of higher monetary value.

Socialists just expect all the risk of capital and choices made by the CEOs to be paid at the same rate as the housekeepers get paid. Otherwise “unfair”.

Yes but unless you know someone in the union leadership, you might not get a job cleaning rooms.

To make money to be highly taxed so the tax money will go to support illegals, welfare cheats, Somali fraudsters and trans operations availability.

The nonworking people we pass who are smoking dope, playing video games or drinking beer at home expect us to get to work on time, do a hard day’s work well and stop complaining.

I guess teachers don’t have as good a union.

And those same workers will in the next news cycle complain about the NYC cost of living as in their economic ignorance (perpetuated by their union leaders) their wages, just like taxes, are an integral part of what generates the cost of living where they live and work. All employers costs and all local and state taxes (costs on individuals and businesses) feed into the local cost of living.

Where unions and tax and spend governments prevail it is an endless vicious cycle of risings costs followed by rising demands for more taxes and higher wages, resulting again in rising costs, and full circle to the errors of governments and unions that feed the rising costs. Its a race no one wins.

My chance of staying even 10 minutes in New York City is approximately nil.

I remember a line from Gary Becker, a Nobel Laurate and famous University of Chicago economics professor: it was easier for a black male living in St. Louis to be accepted into West Point than to be able to join one of the building trade unions in the area.

The leadership of the union that just negotiated that contract for hotel workers just became even more powerful than in the past. They will control the pool of applicants who apply for those jobs.

Due to the cost of living in NYC, 100k in NYC = 55k in Jackson, MS.
