Axed GM employees claim they were dumped in cold, scripted virtual meetings: ‘No appreciation or empathy’

General Motors quietly laid off about 500 to 600 employees this week in a sweeping global shakeup that reportedly blindsided workers with unsettling emails, abrupt virtual meetings and growing fears that artificial intelligence is reshaping the automaker’s workforce.

Many of the affected employees — largely IT workers in Michigan, Texas and other locations around the globe — learned their fate during brief meetings that some workers described as cold and scripted.

“No appreciation or empathy. No questions. Nothing,” one laid-off employee who spent more than a decade at GM told CNBC.

“GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future,” a spokesperson for the Detroit-based auto giant told The Post.

“As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

The cuts came as the Detroit automaker restructures its information technology operations and hunts for workers with more specialized skill sets, including expertise in AI.

Workers inside the company said they had spent months being encouraged to use AI tools more heavily in their day-to-day work before the layoffs hit Monday.

“They’re going to push AI for everyday work and everything else,” a veteran programmer and data scientist who lost their job told CNBC.

“I’ve seen it firsthand. It can make you much more productive, as a programmer. It can really help you get more work done, but AI isn’t going to do you any good if you don’t know the business.”

WV is very red, with the occasional blue dog Democrat at the helm.

The only thing they care about in WV is, do you bring home the pork.

Did I hate moving? You bet!

In general, a family enrolling their children into different government schools every few years does significant damage. A possible solution is create an AI bubble for the children to develop inside of, each child with a personal and loving AI tutor, and maybe even AI friends, and have zero contact with troubled children from outside that bubble.

It used to be most people never moved more than 5 miles away their whole lives. Funding schools with local property taxes made sense. These days, huge property tax bills have zero return on investment, as any well educated children must flee to low tax states to find gainful employment.

Would they feel better if they got cookies?

I basically just lost my business thanks to a new property manager who tripled the rent in the new lease. I’m not gonna work that hard to enrich a property management company. 20 hours a month paid for my bills, I am not working 60 hours to pay the bastards. I can farm out what I make for the same price and come out ahead. Back to contract enfineering.

Anyone interested in a fully stocked cnc machine and fabrication shop PM.

It was almost 30 years ago on a Thursday evening that I received a FedEx letter announcing that my last day would be Friday. We were government consultants and people were often shed at the end of projects or the end of project phases. On Friday I took several of my staff to a grill in Chinatown (DC) that had the best onion rings. We had a very long lunch.

Our evil elitist tech bros have convinced government that there is a labor shortage. It’s just evil at work.

These “victims” may have been let go because of attendance and/or performance issues. However, at-will employment means that the employer doesn’t need to state their reason(s), or even have a reason to layoff or terminate. If you’re laid off, they may want to re-employ you in the future. Plus, the article doesn’t say whether it was direct hires or contractors who were given the boot.

“….we have made the difficult decision…”

Cut the BS, GM. It was not a difficult decision for GM. They found an opportunity to do one or more of this: cut costs, gain efficiency, outsource or insource, centralize or decentralize, leverage AI, or WHATEVER.

It wasn’t a difficult decision for some yahoo to make the decision, and he or she probably doesn’t really care about the human cost and probably earned a raise for this action. As a lifelong corporate dweeb I know the routine, it’s business and your employer is not your friend.

AI I can see. We need to lead the world in that. H1Bs he’s letting the tech bros get away with too much. The whole bullcrap with the $100k bait and switch did nothing. He can’t keep allowing these aholes to import this garbage and put Americans out of work. Lutnick is running interference.

I’ve seen plenty of people who are loyal to companies even when that mnakes no sense. Anyone who thinks some big company cares anything at all about them is delusional.

I was laid off at two large companies, one after 33 years. It was a numbers game and I didn’t go to their resume and retraining classes. I had a good run there. Anyway, the experience I have in my field (military laser rangefinder designators) has made getting another job very easy.

When my job was eliminated once I got an 8 month notice. Empathy?

I still list my job. Then got 12 weeks severance and unemployment pay. Supposed to be 26 weeks but I ended getting 72.

Still didn’t have a job.

Didn’t really try. I was pushing 60. Applied for a lot of hotel accounting jobs ( my previous job) but never even got a “no thank you” letter.

There might be something to it if the final buyer of the product was the winner. If the buyer is not satisfied, the dealer will be one that catches the grief first. As a used car owner/potential buyer, I look at what this product will be worth down the road when I am a potential owner. So far , I haven’t seen much that I would want to own with most of what’s available now when it is several years old. I do see a lot of potential junk that will never be affordable to fix & drive. Won’t name names but I think the ones who build this stuff know who they are.
