Falling fertility: The world could end in empty cradles

Generation Z is easily the most self-absorbed, egocentric generation in history. Their hubris will have consequences for its members, society and the future of humanity.

A Barna Survey on Gen Z attitudes toward marriage and children signals looming disaster.

Overall, the survey by America's foremost Christian pollster shows that Gen Z is largely disconnected from reality. Among 14- to 29-year-olds, support for socialism has increased 17 percentage points since the last time the survey was taken, from 22% to 39%. Why not? The signs of its success are all around us. What do you do when you get caught between Pyongyang and New York City?

Taxpayers will rebel and governments will fall.

I don't society would make it to that point.

Our society and technology is built around an ample workforce. If you don't have enough qualified people to man the necessary and essential jobs the engines of industry stop running. We may be close to that today. Not because we don't have enough people but because so few of them a capable (or willing) of doing necessary work.

I believe that the economy and technology will collapse before we would rebel. Of course it maybe a distinction without a difference. Economic collapse often leads to revolution.

The willing part is of interest. I have met intelligent people that would not apply for good paying jobs because they required a drug test. That baffles me. Taking illicit drugs is more important to you than having a job that would drastically improve your standard of living.

There’s almost zero benefit for men. The opportunity cost is too high. simple risk/reward equation.

Unless you're a billionaire like Donald Trump so you can afford getting married three times lol

Immigrants are making up the difference... They typically have very large families to take advantage of those ‘autism’ spectrum, ADHD and OCD benefits.

Not Even close, look in the mirror. 1000 years from now Boomers will still be cursed for what they have wrought.

Their hubris will have consequences for its members, society and the future of humanity.

After everything your generation has done and continues to do, you actually wrote that. Coming from a Boomer one can only shake your head and laugh.

There are enough babies being born in California for Gavinor Newsom to spend millions of dollars giving them free diapers.

The world isn’t going to end if fewer babies are born. It’ll change, sure, but not end.

Possibly a chemical cause?

Overwhelmingly no. The problem is not that families are forming and couples are trying to have children and failing. There is always a little bit of that, but the overwhelming story is that people don't want kids and don't take the steps towards having them. And this is a global problem, resisted only to a limited degree by a modest number of dissident subcultures. Africa is behind the curve, but very much falling down the same trajectory. And the Muslims and Hispanics that xenophobes like to rail against are very far down the same slope as well.

I hear you, but for sperm counts to go down 50% from the 1940s. I don’t know what that’s about. It definitely needs more study. Of course, feminism has a lot to do with it.

Marriage is becoming a luxury.

It's out of reach unless you're a member of the ruling class.

This mindset is exactly the problem. It's false. It's just that you can't have your big house and RV and trailer and boat and luxury vacations all by age 30 if you get married and have kids.

The author mentions it took his parents 20 years after marriage to afford a house. And a 50's starter house would have been around 1000 square feet, which the modern generation turns up their nose at.

We have more efficient food and housing and clothing than ever before. People can afford marriage and children. They just don't prioritize it.

Fair point, but I've not seen a study correlating sperm counts with successful (or not) pregnancy. I suspect a reduction of X% in sperm results in a reduction in pregnancies of far less than X%. Not on a per-copulation basis, but over, say, a year-long period of trying to have a child. In any case I think this a minor factor.

As others have said, this won't be the end of humanity. But the western Roman Empire underwent a similar population collapse, with survivors huddled in cities with 5-10% of their peak population as things went to ruin around them before the barbarians swept in virtually unopposed. It was the end of civilization.

They don’t build new 1000 sq ft houses. Rent is as high as a mortgage. Kids are a luxury.

Seems like we are going through the same thing again due to AI and the conquest of the West by Islamists.

Kids are a luxury.

Funny that. At America's founding it took 90-95% of the population to focus on food production just to keep from starving, and they had lots of kids. Now that figure is down around 3% but people tell themselves "kids are a luxury" they can't afford. The dissidents can put that lie on your tombstone.

People can have lots of kids. It just means tradeoffs they are not willing to make.

Have we forgotten the Boomers already?

Boomers are a mixed bag, but on average a very intelligent and industrious generation. But they spawned the hippies and the "sexual revolution."

It’s just that with each ejaculation, what is it, I forget, 500 million sperm or something. So 50% would still be 250 million which is still amazing so maybe we can’t see the effects quite yet. But if they keep dropping and trending towards there really could be nothing worse.

My sperm count goes down automatically when my eyes see nose rings, stretched-out ear lobes, multiple unartistic tattoos and hair of various unnatural colors - usually in combinations with each other.

Oh...and when mindless TDS tirades come out of their mouths. That alone negates physical beauty that God bestowed upon them.
