Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
.......
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
.......
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
.......
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
.......
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
.......
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast with one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing'

Mark Knopfler when he was really young.
Good ol days.
I had that album and my neighbor stole it!..
That really stinks.
IMHO “Telegraph Road” on Alchemy is the greatest song on any live album, ever.
You might be right. Surrender on Cheap Trick at Budokan is pretty close.
So good.
Yes, it is at the top of my list too.
It was brand new! I got to listen to it once. He borrowed it and then moved away!........

I feel your pain. My college girlfriend “borrowed” my collection of pirate-themed folk music. She took the CDs, then broke up with me. I don’t miss her. I do miss my CDs.
Thank goodness for YouTube.

Dire Straits is one of the great bands of all time. The guitar riff opening ‘Money for Nothing’ is considered one of the best guitar riffs in rock history. I loved it from the moment I first heard it.
Maybe you can help me here.
I swear when I had the original vinyl of Communiqué, this was the version of “Where Do You Think You’re Going?”

But the official version on YouTube is different, and I can’t remember now which one really was on the original Communiqué.

Mark Knophler killing it!
I have lost all of my music and all of my family photos TWICE when now EX girlfriends stole them. The second time, (I am pretty sure), happened because I let it be known how upset I was when it happened the first time.
Girlfriends should never have access to family photos...........
I turned 20 years old in 1978. I can tell you Dire Straits and The Cars had a major musical impact on my life then.
