FIFA president Gianni Infantino has again defended high ticket prices for this summer's World Cup and brushed off seats for the final being resold at a cost of more than $2 million.
During an appearance at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, Infantino addressed the criticism directed at world soccer's governing body over the prices set for the tournament and the adoption of dynamic pricing.
FIFA has been accused by fans of a "monumental betrayal" on ticket costs, but Infantino has previously stressed that the revenue from the flagship tournament supports the development of soccer globally.
Fans have been further angered by the addition of more expensive categories as the tournament approaches. Many of the tickets still on general sale are for the more expensive categories.
"We have to look at the market," Infantino said. "We are in the market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world, so we have to apply market rates.
"In the U.S., it is permitted to resell tickets as well, so if you were to sell tickets at the price which is too low, these tickets will be resold at a much higher price. And as a matter of fact, even though some people are saying that the ticket prices we have are high, they still end up on the resale market at an even higher price, more than double our price."
Tickets are available via resale platforms including FIFA's own marketplace, and last month four seats for the World Cup final were listed at just under $2.3 million each.
FIFA does not control the asking prices on its resale platform but does take a 15% purchase fee from the buyer of each ticket and a 15% resale fee from the seller.

We’ve reached that point where there are enough rich people, who are willing to pay the exorbitant prices, that squeeze out everyone else.
A perfect example are the big European soccer clubs, who cater to the tourists who want to watch an FC Barcelona game, and are willing to shelve out a couple hundred bucks for the tickets. It’s squeezing out the local fans.
Maybe money will ruin professional sports.
Only when there aren’t enough rich people to support it.
That’s the difference between now and then. When there were relatively few rich people, it would be suicide to raise prices to the point where you kill the market.
But now we have a lot of rich people, so many that you can raise prices without suffering the consequences, the market is still big enough, because now you have a global market. That is why globalism is ultimately doomed to crash, with violent consequences.
I keep waiting for it. I think we're getting close.
Exorbitant pricing finally drove my company out of hosting customers for the Ky Derby
The only teams that have ever won the cup are from Europe or South America. Chances are a team from there will win as usual. A US win would be fun to see and the meltdown of the rest of the world would be phenomenal.

Well, some do say that France is an African team.

I wouldnt have minded watching Tampa Lightning in a playoff game last week. But every single game required me to pay to see. Broadcast TV with ads isnt enough. Screw em
I just watch the highlights on YT without knowing the score.
Expensive ticket just to be sure target options of Iranian sleeper cells.
Well at least you won’t have to worry about missing more games.
Go Sabres!

And to think, 1930s depression era was the Golden Years of baseball.
It's like the whining about Taylor Swift's tickets.
What sane person pays good money to watch paint dry?
Another post about the most retarded professional โsportโ in the world.
And it is becoming more popular here in USA.
Soccer is the world’s most popular sport for retards and inbreds.
True for sure. Soccer is hardly a “major” sport for an audience vs say worldwide baseball (see: Japan)— soccer’s appeal is the very simple requirements that are not expensive— a ball, a marked field and two goals. Easy access.
This snot-nose meteoric rise in ticket prices is, Euro-Weenie elitists gouging those other idiots who “want to be in the club” and told to pay more to cut out all the others.
Very different for instance than Wimbledon, which derived all the way back to at the very earliest reference to Henry V— when a “tun” of tennis balls are presented to Henry by the herald from the dauphin of France-— with the excellent reparte reply from Henry in the play. “What treasure, uncle? Tennis balls my liege!” .... “when we have matched our rackets to these balls we will in France by God’s Grace play a set shall strike his father’s crown into the hazard... and we understand him well...”. Tennis not being of course any kind of a “commoner’s” sport or ever was until expanded by marketing and cash raising prizes.
