After years of construction and anticipation, Metro’s long-awaited D Line extension officially opened to passengers Friday morning, giving riders a faster connection between downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

The newly opened stretch adds three underground stations along Wilshire Boulevard: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.

Metro officials say the expanded route can take riders from downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in about 20 minutes, dramatically cutting down commute times through one of the region’s busiest traffic corridors.

This will make it easier for the Beverly Hills people to get to and from work, a big boost for the Beverly Hills crowd, I hope the fare isn’t too high.

They should have a ceremony at the hospital for the first passenger assaulted and slashed on the route. Historic.

Meantime, Georgetown in DC still doesn’t regret keeping DC Metro from putting a station there. They knew what would happen.

In the 1990’s I worked at Flower Street in downtown L.A. Downtown was great but getting out west was a chore during the day. This extension is 20 years too late to save L.A.

“What could possibly go wrong?”

Ever see the movie Daylight? And putting an underground railroad on an historically active earthquake fault is a write off. The Rock better warm up his helicopter so he can get to the backhoe.

What was the original cost estimate? What was the final cost? What was the original timeline? How long did it actually take to build?
