A man went out on a morning walk in southwest Norway and stumbled upon a surprise: an elite warrior's sword scabbard that was purposefully buried 1,500 years ago. The rare gold object, which was richly decorated with serpentine animals, was probably an offering to the gods at a time of famine and societal turmoil, researchers say...
The sixth-century gold artifact, which is about 2.4 inches (6 centimeters) long and weighs 1.2 ounces (33 grams), once adorned the scabbard of an elite warrior's sword. Only 17 others have been discovered to date in Northern Europe, and most were found in hoards with other objects...
During the sixth century, southern Norway experienced a significant population decline due to volcanic eruptions, a lengthy cold snap and bubonic plague pandemics. One of the power centers at the time was located at Hove, where a large farm complex and numerous gold artifacts have been discovered, suggesting the people who lived there were elite...
Although the scabbard decoration appears at first glance to be a series of curving lines, Kristoffersen noted that the middle of the design includes two animal figures in profile facing each other... These ribbon-shaped creatures were commonly used in the first half of the sixth century in Norway...
The scabbard ornament is part of a rare and mysterious group of objects sometimes found in Scandinavia that include spiral rings; gold, disc-shaped pendants; and these harmonica-shaped weapon ornaments. Experts think the groups of artifacts were deposited on purpose as "sacrificial" or "killed" objects that were offered to the gods to ask for protection from natural disasters.

Good thing this story about a scabbard was not reported in Latin.
I’d sooner believe it was hidden there so he wouldn’t be robbed of it.
Beautiful. I need to start hiking in Norway. All I see on my hikes in California and Idaho are old rotten fence posts, butterflies, lizards, turkeys, buzzards and crows.
Same here. Lacking further direct evidence it was placed there as a sacrifice, it appears to be speculation by scholars to enhance interest in the find. The simplest explanation is always the best explanation; no need to make things up.

Hide under a Gold toppled tree rather know you would get robbed for it?.
Early safe?
It doesn't seem to matter where or what the find may be, archeologists often attribute a religious significance to the object.
Toppled trees are too lazy to be of much use. All they do is lie around.
I would still have posted it, but the excerpts wouldn’t have made any sense. 😉😜😏
Sounds perfect to me. I generally np around this time of the day...
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!
They always wish something was sacrified to gods.
Maybe the guy hid it there.
Maybe a thief hid it there.
Much more likely. What have you buried? Was it ever a sacrifice to a god?
Where did the other elite warriors put ‘em?
Good thing this story was about a sword scabbard ORNAMENT, despite the mistaken title. THus the poor soldier was not deprived of his killing weapon, merely the bragging ornament.
FROM OUR “IF YOU THINK YOU GOT IT TOUGH” DEPT::: Norway experienced a significant population decline due to volcanic eruptions, a lengthy cold snap and bubonic plague pandemics.
😁
The sword is the killing weapon—the scabbard is simply the sheath the sword is put in when not being used.
