The scabbard ornament is part of a rare and mysterious group of objects sometimes found in Scandinavia that include spiral rings; gold, disc-shaped pendants; and these harmonica-shaped weapon ornaments. Experts think the groups of artifacts were deposited on purpose as "sacrificial" or "killed" objects that were offered to the gods to ask for protection from natural disasters.

Good thing this story about a scabbard was not reported in Latin.
I’d sooner believe it was hidden there so he wouldn’t be robbed of it.
Beautiful. I need to start hiking in Norway. All I see on my hikes in California and Idaho are old rotten fence posts, butterflies, lizards, turkeys, buzzards and crows.
Same here. Lacking further direct evidence it was placed there as a sacrifice, it appears to be speculation by scholars to enhance interest in the find. The simplest explanation is always the best explanation; no need to make things up.

Hide under a Gold toppled tree rather know you would get robbed for it?.

It doesn't seem to matter where or what the find may be, archeologists often attribute a religious significance to the object.
Toppled trees are too lazy to be of much use. All they do is lie around.

Maybe the guy hid it there.
Maybe a thief hid it there.

Good thing this story was about a sword scabbard ORNAMENT, despite the mistaken title. THus the poor soldier was not deprived of his killing weapon, merely the bragging ornament.

The sword is the killing weapon—the scabbard is simply the sheath the sword is put in when not being used.
