Dig deeper:

In the video, an 8-year-old boy who was out fishing with his family is seen being attacked by the beaver.

When the child tried to run back up the bank and out of the water, the beaver pursued the boy and ended up biting the child on his thigh.

When the boy finally managed to get up, he threw the beaver back into the lake.

Local perspective:

Several people had been bitten by the beaver and ended up testing positive for rabies, according to the Mahwah Township Health Department.

Bites from them are no joke even when they aint rabid. They gnaw down large trees. Flesh and bones are light work for them

As a former resident, I can attest that living in NJ can do that to you.

But was it rabid?

“Several people had been bitten by the beaver and ended up testing positive for rabies, according to the Mahwah Township Health Department”

I think the reporter (I use the word lightly) meant to write that the beaver ended up testing positive for rabies. Because there is no way in Hell the people bitten by the beaver would have foregone the shots required. Of course it is possible that they waited for the lengthy incubation period to see if symptoms developed before pursuing confirmation with testing.

All the jokes and silly comments aside (I’m surprised nobody worked Uranus in there), the 8 year old showed pretty good presence of mind to hurl the beaver back into the water.

That reminds me that I need to make up a 3nd clip for my little 9mm so that if I need to switch quickly from personal defense to shot for a poisonous snake to a few snapping turtle rounds, I have the right ammo in a clip ready to go.

A Russian fisherman was bitten on the leg about 3 years ago. He bled out from the bite, which severed his femoral artery.

Of course it is possible that they waited for the lengthy incubation period to see if symptoms developed before pursuing confirmation with testing.

Once a person is symptomatic, it’s over. 99.9% mortality rate. So, the beaver must have been euthanized and samples taken to confirm.

You’re throwing money away son:

As of early 2026, a prime, well-handled, large beaver pelt generally averages ($20) to ($30), with top-quality or extra-large (XXL) pelts potentially reaching ($60) to ($70) at auction.

For your condsideration:

Beaver pelts are not prime in summer.

Beaver pelts take a lot of work to be “well handled”.
Price at auction tends to be considerably higher than the price paid to the trapper.

The trapper might get $10 to $30 for a prime, well handled pelt.

To be well handled, probably 2 hours work, with more time to get the pelt to a buyer, assuming the person doing the work does not have to spend time learning how to do the above.

There is considerable skill involved.

Thanks for your light-hearted comment.

Yes, That is what I knew must be the course of action. Which is why I was certain the author got it wrong.
