The Masks Are Off: How Europe Betrayed the Trump Administration
American Thinker ^ | 7 May, 2026 | Istvan Toth

Europe has betrayed President Trump. For years, EU leaders and key national governments have undermined the White House's agenda quietly, working to remove pro-Washington figures from power. We recently witnessed this in Romania, where Cătălin Georgescu -- a clear frontrunner who favored closer ties with the U.S. -- was effectively sidelined in the presidential race. In Hungary, there was a concerted effort to defeat Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party in April. Now, anti-Trump Europe has stepped out of the shadows and is openly distancing itself from the administration, leaving it to face its challenges in Iran alone.

This isn't allyship; it's more like the antics of teenagers going through political puberty. Many Europeans, basking in what they perceive as setbacks for Trump, seem oblivious to the consequences if he reevaluates his relationship with them and stops extending courtesies based on shared transatlantic ties. It appears the time for that reckoning is now upon us.

Europe: The Free Riders

The strikes against Iran created a clear before-and-after moment in U.S.-European relations. Setting aside the debate over the necessity of such an operation, President Trump demonstrated his role as a predictable partner and reliable ally by reaching out to Europe for assistance. Even strong nations sometimes need support.

But Europe demurred. Their response ranged from a flat "no" from Berlin to vague preconditions for potential aid.

Audacity Knows No Limits

Lithuania is a perfect example of the increasingly transactional relationship that Europeans have with the United States. Its barely audible leadership expressed a willingness to help Washington -- but only if formally asked. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė shamelessly requested that U.S. Special Envoy David Hale resolve Lithuania’s domestic issues -- specifically, cigarette smuggling and the detention of a transport vehicle -- during his upcoming visit to Minsk.

The Europeans (in general) have not learned from previous dabbles with leftism and totalitarianism. They seem to hate the principles our country was founded on. Why should we expend U.S. lives to protect that?

Europeans always think of Americans as houd mouth cowboys. On top of that Europeans have a superiority complex, totally unjustified based on history of wars among themselves and March towards socialism.

“They seem to hate the principles our country was founded on.”

So does half the U.S.

The Europeans have chosen to protect their cities from Muslim bombs by stuffing them with Muslims.

Does or did NATO, as NATO, have a role to play in terms of unclogging the Strait of Hormuz?

Pursuant to its own notion of what its mission is in the world?

Only asking because Trump might have been demanding more of NATO, as NATO, than NATO allows itself to do, as an organization.

Now, the European countries that make up NATO are of course not subject to any kind of “mission statement”, and could have helped. And many should have helped, or helped more.

...which many of FR's resident neocons unequivocally supported.

Yet this anti-Trump Europe expects continued long-term support from the U.S., including in matters of security and strategic stability.

At the same time, however, they refuse to offer even symbolic gestures of reciprocity or consider American interests. Providing meaningful assistance with the Iran conflict is considered unthinkable. Instead, EU leaders feel entitled to lecture American officials and criticize Washington’s pragmatic policies.

The bolded part: that's an undeserved sense of entitlement. And while the article says 'anti Trump', what it really means imho is that Europe expects US citizens to be both their piggy bank and mercenary army that they don't have to pay for.

I would watch 2026 and 2028 for EU (and now satellite England) interference in US elections.

They will always hate and envy us. We shed their chains in the 18th century and they can’t let it go.

Condi Rice said it long ago, when she was Secretary of State under Bush: “Europe’s values are not our values.” We should stop pretending that they are like us. They are not. Their antiTrumpism, for example, is merely a distraction to keep from their own people the fact that collectively, Europe is a basket case—economically, politically, culturally. And that they have done it to themselves.

You cannot betray that to which you do not owe loyalty.

I post about this all the time when articles are posted about American figure “X” betrays Ukraine or similar.

“Europe” does not owe loyalty to any US administration, official, or politician. Zero.

So, “Europe” can’t “betray” the Trump administration, or any other US administration.

Pull out of NATO, bring all our troops home from Europe and let them suffer the consequences.

“Europe’s values are not our values.”

Most Americans still have more in common culturally and ethically with a middle class Englishman or German than they do with their fellow so-called US citizens throwing gang signs in the inner city or speaking garbled Spanglish in the barrio.

While the Eurocrats in Brussels are a malignant influence, right wing nationalist movements in Europe (such as Fidesz in Hungary, AfD in Germany) deserve our support.

Pull all the troops out of EU countries. Let NATO do its own thing under EU control without the USA. We have spent trillions rebuilding Europe after WWII (that is not WW eleven), providing their defense. After the first Gulf war, we brought home thousands of service people that had been in the gulf and brought those troops back to the USA and started the pull out. Pull out the rest. Let them defend their selves. Time for them to grow up and show up. Time for us to defend what we need to defend. Germany, france and the UK ain’t it. Keep troops in European countries, like Poland, who support us.

The historic civilizations of. Europe, who gave great contributions to the world, are in the process of becoming extinct. A singleness of purpose totalitarian collective is altering them on the way to conquest.
