House passes bill to fund most of DHS in major step toward ending 10-week shutdown

The House on Thursday passed a bill to fund the bulk of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), minus Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a major step toward ending the record-breaking, 10-week shutdown.

The bill passed by voice vote less than an hour after Republican leaders sent out a notice that the chamber would consider the legislation amid increasing pressure from the White House, Senate, and Republican rank-and-file.

The bill passed the Senate last month and now goes to President Trump’s desk for his signature.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had sat on the bill for weeks, but came under increasing pressure to pass it amid dwindling funds to pay DHS staff.

The version the House passed does not include a technical correction that Johnson and hardline Republicans said they wanted for a section stipulating $0 for border security and immigration enforcement, which would have required the bill to go back to the Senate.

A blueprint for the “skinny” reconciliation bill passed a procedural hurdle in the House on Wednesday, adding to that pressure. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is among the Republicans who have said he wanted the House to pass the Senate DHS bill now that the House has cleared that first hurdle.

The bipartisan Senate DHS bill would fund the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Coast Guard, Secret Service, and other critical agencies. The “skinny” DHS bill, which Republicans will aim to pass alone without Democrats, will fund ICE and Border Patrol.

The Senate already passed it.

MAGA didn’t want it to be enacted without funding ICE and Border Patrol, but Johnson and the White House finally capitulated.

King Hakeem the Potatohead and his butt boy, Chunky Schumer have to have something up their sleeve to keep I.C.E. and CBP from ever be funded again. The GOOBs capitulated alright. Cowards. With the jackasses we’ve got on Capistol Hill now, we never would have won the Revolutionary War. The bad news is, slowly but surely the illegal aliens are taking over the Congress and the U.S. Government.

They will restore ICE and Border Patrol funding with an immediate Reconciliation Bill.... at least, they seems to be the plan.

Schumer is jumping up and down like Rumplestiltskin.

I believe it will be for 3 years...i.e., throughout Trump's term.

Could you image a scenario where the Democrats controlled the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives and the Republicans were somehow able to successfully defund an area of the government they disagreed with?

We have been abandoned.

You are joking right? Of course he will sign it. He has bigger fish to fry than worry about the people who supported him for 3 elections.

Our greatest ally is in need.

He no longer needs our votes but he DOES need political capital to retain his fortune and keep himself out of jail.

He knows where his bread is buttered.

The big question for the dems is this: can we keep the defunding of the Secret Service going any longer in order to encourage yet another assassination attempt, maybe with a little ...ahem...financial backing on the side to allow for better planning?

So the people who lose the Presidency, the House and the Senate in an election get to run the country?

“...ICE and border enforcement, though, still remain unfunded.
Republicans are seeking to fund those for three years
through a special process known as reconciliation,
which would allow Republicans to bypass a filibuster
in the Senate...”
