That process started in the 1930s with the importation of the Frankfurt School into Teachers College. By that time public schooling was such a large enterprise that it took generations for that communist ideology with all of its obvious baggage to overcome institutional inertia. I went to one of those, a school for gifted kids run by Hungarian dissident priests who got out from behind the Iron Curtain. It’s now defunct. I didn’t cooperate there, or in yeshiva either. I’m nothing but a troublemaker, I guess. But I do have a two-year degree in paralegal studies, fwiw. Hate lawyers. Studied literature, Arabic, Ancient Greek, and composed poems while commuting to and from work.

There already was an infrastructure in place to educate kids, and a high literacy and numeracy rate. Public education was created locally to replace that infrastructure with something more usable to the authorities. It’s in the video.
