Millionaire US big game hunter, 75, is trampled to death by five elephants while hunting antelope in central Africa

A millionaire US big-game hunter was ambushed and killed by five elephants whilst hunting small forest antelope in central Africa.

Californian vineyard owner Ernie Dosio, 75 - who owns a vast collection of exotic animal heads in trophy rooms at home - was trampled to death.

He was being guided by a professional hunter in the thick forest of Gabon on a £30,000 stalk for a shot at the elusive yellow-backed duiker.

Over the decades he has hunted elephants, leopard, rhino, buffalo and lion across Africa and back home in the US he has hunted almost every species of wild deer.

But the highly respected hunter's luck ran out last Friday while in the Lope-Okanda rainforest when his hunt stumbled into five female elephants with a calf.

African elephants are the largest living mammals and females can stand 12ft tall at the shoulder, weigh nearly four tons and run at speeds of up to 25mph

The startled elephant herd immediately charged Mr Dosio and his professional hunter.

The elephants were so well hidden in the dense undergrowth they appeared 'as if from nowhere' and the professional with the high-powered rifle was just flung aside.

He was seriously injured and lost his gun in the thick bush as the elephants attacked the terrified hunter with just a shotgun who was then brutally trampled underfoot.

A retired game hunter in Cape Town who knows the victim said: 'Ernie has been hunting since he could hold a rifle and has many trophies from Africa and the US.

'Although many disagree with big-game hunting, all Ernie's hunts were strictly licensed and above board and were registered as conservation in culling animal numbers.

Animal karma? So you’re fine if a cow kills you and grinds you up into a hamburger?

Why was he still doing this at age 75?

And he’s a millionaire or a psychopath?

The hunters I know all have one hard and fast rule.

Only kill what you plan to eat.....this crap here is nothing but some rich guy feeding his ego if you ask me.

I know a lot about hunting. As in the two-legged type carrying automatic weapons.

That depends on the context. African countries allow legal safaris to control the animal population and make a bit of money.

As long as the hunters obey the law, it’s all good.
It is the poachers that I have no sympathy for.

Ignorant boomers as always.

Paid hunting is over 60% of the wildlife conservation and anti poaching budgets in Zambia and Tanzania I know for sure. At least half in Namibia too.

Without paid hunters there would be no park and wildlife rangers to even try to stop the poachers nor would the countries even care about it. The only reason they stop poachers is because it cuts into the money that would come from hunters. $30,000 for a single animal vs under 100 for poached goods in the local black market. Sure not.money will be made once those goods are smuggled to the first world but the local impact on economy is small much smaller than what hunting revenue would bring.

Also hunters need places to stay, staff to guide them, food to eat every step in the process brings revenue from outside the impoverished region. Poachers strip mine resources and bring zero additional economic growth.

Flat out most parks and reserves in Africa would not exist without professional hunters and the Rangers they support.

Always very impressed by these people. Most people don’t risk their necks to bring home the bacon. Their appetite for risk is far higher than mine. Skydiving is safer. Gravity doesn’t jump out out of nowhere and try to kill you. Even rock-climbing is more predictable.

Never had any use for trophy hunters. Agree with you, every animal I have hunted went to the dinner table.
