Millionaire US big game hunter, 75, is trampled to death by five elephants while hunting antelope in central Africa

A millionaire US big-game hunter was ambushed and killed by five elephants whilst hunting small forest antelope in central Africa.

Californian vineyard owner Ernie Dosio, 75 - who owns a vast collection of exotic animal heads in trophy rooms at home - was trampled to death.

He was being guided by a professional hunter in the thick forest of Gabon on a £30,000 stalk for a shot at the elusive yellow-backed duiker.

Over the decades he has hunted elephants, leopard, rhino, buffalo and lion across Africa and back home in the US he has hunted almost every species of wild deer.

But the highly respected hunter's luck ran out last Friday while in the Lope-Okanda rainforest when his hunt stumbled into five female elephants with a calf.

African elephants are the largest living mammals and females can stand 12ft tall at the shoulder, weigh nearly four tons and run at speeds of up to 25mph

The startled elephant herd immediately charged Mr Dosio and his professional hunter.

The elephants were so well hidden in the dense undergrowth they appeared 'as if from nowhere' and the professional with the high-powered rifle was just flung aside.

He was seriously injured and lost his gun in the thick bush as the elephants attacked the terrified hunter with just a shotgun who was then brutally trampled underfoot.

A retired game hunter in Cape Town who knows the victim said: 'Ernie has been hunting since he could hold a rifle and has many trophies from Africa and the US.

'Although many disagree with big-game hunting, all Ernie's hunts were strictly licensed and above board and were registered as conservation in culling animal numbers.

They had to be hunted, idiot.

They were specifically animals that needed to be culled. He even paid to do it for them.

Aside from being willing to travel outside of the country and paying locals for the privilege, he was not different from locals who get a permit to shoot deer or elk.

“He got Rachel Corried.”

The difference being, primarily, that Rachel was run over by ONE TANK. Mr. I like to kill small animals with a high powered rifle got run over by 5 elephants !!!

An unconfirmed report from the jungle stated that the hunter’s final words were, “Ungawa Tonto, ungawa!”

Most hunters of deer or elk expect to mount a trophy head off their kill.

This hunter was no different, and paid locals to help cull for them.

I know no “subsistence” hunters, from all who hunted with permits through the Midwest. It was a passion and they ate the meat, but none “required” it and were farmers or tradesmen.

There might be subsistence hunters in Alaska and north Canada, but most every hunter has a real job and are not explicitly “living off the land.”

You City Boys apparently don't know these things.

The only reason why most of us have empathy for such animals is because we either saw them in a circus and doing tricks or in a cage in a zoo or on Walt Disney’s wild animal show they used to have.

If we didn’t see the animals, most of us would not really think about what happens to them in Africa or elsewhere.

Man’s got to know his limitations.
Now they can put his head on the wall, right beside the Elephant’s head.

I can’t believe people can’t find some thing better to do with their time than kill animals, then have them stuffed so they can look at them dead. Some how that makes them feel batter?

If you have to ask the question, you would never understand the answer.

I cannot believe or understand the comments of the anti hunters here.

I didn't realize "conservatives" can be as ignorant as leftist extremists.

Is this now "democrat underground"?

The elephants should have stepped on him gently at first. Let him have his ‘I can’t breathe’ moment.

It’s not leftist brainwashing, silly person.

It is recognition of a certain sort of arrogance that a person can consume scarce resources without limitations or risks - just because they’re wealthy. A person wants to play predator, he may achieve the end of a predator.

You play near wild elephants, you have a better than good chance of becoming a wet spot in the dirt.

Only kill what you plan to eat.....this crap here is nothing but some rich guy feeding his ego if you ask me.

One of the rules in these hunts is all of the meat is given to the locals.

I believe in only killing what you are to eat or give to poor folks here though.

When young I hunted to eat.

Haven't hunted in decades now as I can afford to buy meat someone else has killed, gutted, butchered and packaged.

Most of these animals were either local problems that villagers wanted gone or culling of over abundant herds. The African nations manage their wild game and use the hunting fees to maintain conservation. Most of the time the meat goes to the villagers.

Caring for animals is leftist?

Being ignorant is usually the reason for being a leftist.

Being ignorant of the difference between legal hunting and poaching makes one wonder what else one is ignorant of.

Next you’ll tell me how to stupidly risking your life for work to make money is evil and it should all be provided to you in a safe and controlled environment.

I see a bunch of leftist Bambi loons here. You apparently know nothing about regulated hunting. Conservation experts rely upon hunters to balance game populations. It's either game hunters (like the deceased) who pay the area handsomely for the hunt, or, they hire professional hunters to cull the herds.

And who cares if the hunter has stuffed mounts? It's his testimony to the animal.
