In the middle of an Easter lunch at the White House, President Donald Trump went off script to address speculation about JD Vance's role in securing a deal to end the war in Iran.
"If it doesn't happen, I'm blaming JD Vance," Trump joked, drawing laughter at last week's East Room event attended by senior administration officials including the vice-president, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. And "if it does happen," Trump added, "I'm taking full credit."
The remarks perfectly captured Vance's predicament as he leads a US delegation holding talks with Iran in Pakistan. It is the most challenging assignment of Vance's vice-presidency so far - one with a limited upside and plenty to lose if negotiations fail.
Vance's diplomatic mission to Islamabad is a political minefield. To make progress in reaching a permanent agreement to end the war, he will have to satisfy several stakeholders with competing interests, and who all distrust each other after a six-week military campaign that has engulfed the Middle East and roiled the global economy.
US allies are watching Vance closely to see how he'll perform, one European official said. Vance "needs to step into the room and deliver something," added the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Otherwise he will be diminished."

I believe that sending JD was a good idea, as it shows the whacko mullahs (as well as our alleged allies) the importance of the moment.

My assessment of Marco Rubio is that he is a TV character who is actually one of the dumbest people on the national Republican political scene.
Also, JD has a strong personal friendship with Don Jr. I think Rubio has outperformed and JD has yet to show what he can do. This is his chance to do so.
It should be rather simple for Vance... Just go to the negotiation table, listen to Iran’s insane demands and then walk out, get on the phone and tell Trump to start the bombing. Negotiating with Iran is impossible... They want it all and they want a cherry on top of it like they got when they negotiated with a senile Biden and Muslim Obama.
Yeh, I’m not sure he’s a great pick. A one year senator and prior to that a venture capital guy. I thought he was supposed to be concentrating on fraud.

He has too much on the line politically. Should have sent someone not running for president next year and someone much more familiar with Iran and all the players... Maybe a general with personal experience there. The 2 people they’re negotiating with are IRGC officers.

There is no National election next year and in addition I’m sure there is a team representing the USA not just Vance. And for that matter I would think Israel is present as well.
Let’s hope he doesn’t become a guest of PAK’s ISI, the IRGC and AFGN Taliban. They are all known hostage takers and anti-Western terrorist organizations.
