The protests have escalated and the Dublin-Regime has called out all available police. Water cannons have been used against protestors at one refinery.

There are rumors of military reluctance, but nothing solid, and their limited numbers of vehicles were seen driving around Apr 9. Claimed to be "practicing for peacekeeping in Lebanon".

The article is not very specific. It says that the Garda is concerned about “fuel protests”.

I’m not quite sure what that means. But I do know that Ireland has foolishly let in many Muslims. So could a “fuel protest” actually be a Muslim protest of some sort?

🤔

Fuel Protests in Ireland (April 2026)

The fuel protests in Ireland are ongoing nationwide demonstrations involving farmers, hauliers (truck drivers), and other vehicle owners. They are blocking roads, motorways, and key fuel infrastructure to demand government action on soaring fuel prices.

Why the Protests Started

Fuel prices have spiked sharply in recent weeks, driven largely by global oil supply disruptions linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Petrol is around €1.90–€1.94 per litre, while diesel has reached €2.14 or higher.

Protesters say existing government supports (such as a temporary cut to fuel duties) do not go far enough, especially for rural communities, farmers, and transport businesses.

Key Demands

What the Protests Look Like

Impact So Far

Government Response

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and ministers have called the blockades “unacceptable” and “an act of national sabotage.” They say a new support package is ready but will not be announced until the blockades stop.

Note: The situation is changing rapidly. For the latest updates, check reliable Irish news sources like RTÉ, The Irish Times, or BBC News.

Gasoline tax in Ireland, including”Carbon Tax” etc, is well above $2 per gallon.

Typical 20 gallon tank, you pay more than $40 in taxes, plus the cost of the fuel.

Oil Refineries in Ireland and the UK - April 2026

Ireland

Number of operational oil refineries: 1

This is the Whitegate Refinery (operated by Irving Oil) in County Cork. It has a capacity of around 75,000 barrels per day and supplies roughly 25–40% of Ireland’s fuel needs. Ireland imports the majority of its refined petroleum products.

No other oil refineries exist in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

United Kingdom (entire UK)

Number of operational oil refineries: 4 major refineries

These are:

There may be one or two very small/minor facilities, but the industry is described as having four main operational sites. This is down from 6 in recent years and far below the historical peak of around 18 in the 1970s.

In the UK, two refineries closed in 2025:

Primary reasons cited for these closures include:

The closures are heavily linked to the UK’s aggressive net-zero policies, carbon pricing, and the broader energy transition. Industry groups argue these green policies have made UK refining uncompetitive, leading to greater reliance on imported fuels.

The remaining four UK refineries are also under pressure from the same carbon taxes and policy environment, with warnings of potential further closures.

Up to 500 gas stations without fuel this night.

It’s a national emergency due to farmer blockades of ports/refinerys.

Farmers protesting the price of fuel by reducing the supply of fuel to everyone.

“Petrol is around €1.90–€1.94 per litre, while diesel has reached €2.14 or higher”

Gas over $8/gallon
Diesel over $10/gallon

yikes

That’ll bring an economy to a halt, quick.

I wonder what Rory will say on Sunday if he wins? Probably nothing, but hopefully something. He was brave enough to take a stand against LIV, maybe he will take a stand for something much more important.

I did not know what Garda was:

An Garda Síochána; meaning “the Guardian(s) of the Peace”) is the national police and security service of the Republic of Ireland. It is more commonly referred to as the Gardaí; “Guardians”) or “the Guards”. The service is headed by the Garda Commissioner, who is appointed by the Irish Government. Its headquarters are in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Ireland recognized the State of Palestine they are certainly on a ‘hit list’ for that alongside Spain and Norway who were also out front on the issue.

But the Irish tradition the IRA are flat-out Marxist-Leninists are they having a say in this.

To put it in context it was about 1e\l when I lived there about 17 years ago.

It’s always been horribly expensive.

Oh, and much respect to the Garda. Nice guys.
