A terrifying attack on an Indianapolis city councilman’s home has ignited fears that mounting opposition to the data centers that power artificial intelligence is taking an increasingly violent turn.
Ron Gibson, who is serving his third term on the Indianapolis City-County Council, said someone fired 13 shots into his front door early Monday – and left a handwritten note that said “NO DATA CENTERS”.
That was just days after Gibson attended a Metropolitan Development Commission meeting to support a data center project, one the developer said would be used at least in part for AI, in a local neighborhood — drawing boos from attendees when he stepped up to speak about the jobs it could bring, according to a CBS News report.
“Just steps from where those bullets struck is our dining room table, where my son had been playing with his Legos the day before,” Gibson said. “That reality is deeply unsettling.”
Opposition to data centers has escalated rapidly over the past year, according to a November report by the Soufan Center, a security-focused research group. The hulking facilities have become lightning rods for fears that AI is poised to eliminate jobs, even as the data centers themselves threaten to jack up electricity and water bills.
Last week, a data center developer in California alleged in a lawsuit that a group of eco-activists orchestrated a vicious online attack that led to calls for “public executions” and Luigi Mangione-inspired death threats.
In December, a city council meeting in Port Washington, Wis., ended with police cuffing and dragging off a group of middle-aged women who derailed a hearing on a data center project, local news footage shows. The women were cited for disorderly conduct, according to reports.

I just spent the $10 to watch the movie.
The first few minutes of the sheriff being forced to wear a mask in his cruiser was worth it.
Thank you!
OMG the sheriff in the grocery store could d been based on me.
😆
I” masked up” as required but I wore a death skull full biker mask under a black hoodie with a redlining and black sunglasses
On the second trip to the store the manager said I didn’t have to wear a mask anymore because I was terrifying the other shoppers.
😆
A non woke Pedro Pascal movie?
It might be Luddites, it also might be people who have to pay their electric bill.
Must have had the Cordyceps removed.
I proposed on a project and the client sent me a map of 8 areas of interest for some large construction project. It was for Amazon (and located in Eastern Washington state). Large parcels of land scattered near three towns.
I asked him “So will we be studying all 8 areas or just one of them?”
“All eight.”
“And then will they pick one site to develop or what?”
“Nope - they are building all 8.”
This was before I even really heard much about AI. I thought it was just computer servers for their regular buying/selling/shipping business.
The drawings showed huge buildings and cooling ponds, with very small parking lots. Maybe 10 to 20 spots to park. The client said the buildings were pretty much stacked wall to wall with computers and only a small office area for a few people to monitor it all.
I was just talking to a gal that does TV programming. She is waiting to get laid off. One group of 50 just got laid off. One guy running AI on the other side of the country does their job now.
Most of me is against this huge AI push, but another part of me thinks it is just new technology to help people do jobs better and quicker.
Colossus: The Forbin Project
Pascal's character is very woke in the movie, and a hypocrite.
Also observe all the people wearing masks under their noses or around their chins.
And there's a blink and you miss it scene of the massive hoard of toilet paper in his character's home.
The filmmaker really nailed the whole 2020 Covidiot/Woke/BLM vibe.
Yup.
Noticed that right away.
He can’t help himself.
I’m not a fan.
Nice!
Head's up though, the film takes a strange turn at around the halfway point, a signature of Ari Aster's movies.
Still enjoyed it immensely though, even if remembering this time really pissed me off.
You asked me about BLM.
Well, they seem to have lost their collective marbles and/or totally misjudged our demographics and insanely decided to hold a “ rally” just across the river from me in Berkeley Springs WV.
Imagine their surprise when they were welcomed by thousands of gun toting hillbillies, bikers and veterans who lined the streets
Suffice to say what little they tried to say was heard by no one, being drowned out by patriotic songs.
Even the pitiful antifa twerps were hiding behind the LEO until they could sneak out of town under the cover of darkness.
My doctor sat on his office porch with a small arsenal just in case anyone chose mayhem
So yeah, we missed the BLM crap but I have never been prouder of my locals than I was that day.
😊
I am very grateful you put me onto it.
Otherwise I’d never heard of it.
Thank you!
🤗
I was also sporting t shirts from The Walking Dead that said Warning! Infected” and “We Are All Infected”
I was a mercilessly sarcastic rebellious b!tch during the scamdemic and I am not ashamed.
I honestly miss the days when people ran the other way as I wandered the aisles…going the “wrong way” according to the arrows, of course.
I enjoyed standing 10” inside the “ 6’ spaces” too.
Some of us kinda had a little fun with that era of idiocy.
I also outran the Walmart mask gestapo once.
I may not be young anymore but I’m small and slippery.
😬
AI systems are not going away. The buildouts of data centers will crater. Companies can’t keep throwing cash at data centers that can’t break even financially.
You don’t. Can you find an AI data center that’s breaking even, financially?
Dot Com bubble 2.0.
I have to imagine that within short order, the size of the data centers will shrink.
Those who own and operate the data centers should be required by states to pay for whatever costs are required to enhance the electric grid, and to swallow the costs in electricity passed on to consumers. This is not likely to happen as long as Tech Oligarchs line the pockets of politicians - instead they’re given tax breaks and other sweetheart deals while contributing virtually nothing to local economies. Data centers an economic albatross around our necks - put them in the backyards of Musk, Ellison, Zuckerberg, etc, not on our backyards.
Require data centers to come with their own power say an SMR. That way they could even sell power back into the grid.
I’m not saying you’re wrong. We’ve been down a similar road before, with the Dot Com boom.
