Unidentified animal attack leaves McAlester [OK] mother fighting for life; father on dialysis awaiting kidney

PITTSBURG COUNTY, Okla. — A McAlester mother is clinging to life at a Tulsa hospital following a brutal attack by an unidentified animal that investigators said is unlike anything they've seen in over 30 years.

Alicia Maxey was found severely injured on Sunday morning in a remote yard near Blanco.

While the family initially believed a dog was responsible, the sheer scale of the injuries has prompted the Pittsburg County Sheriff's Office to bring in wildlife experts to solve the mystery of what kind of animal attacked Alicia.

According to investigators, Alicia had pulled into a nearby driveway.

She was found roughly an hour later by the homeowner, an EMT, who immediately began lifesaving measures until a medical helicopter could arrive.

"[In] 38 years, I've never been involved or seen anything to this extent as far as injuries caused by a wild animal," said Pittsburg County Sherriff Frankie McClendon.

The sheriff's office is now working with Oklahoma Wildlife Services to identify the animal.

Evidence, including clothing ripped from the victim, has been sent to a lab for DNA testing to determine if the attacker was a dog, a bear or a mountain lion.

From her hospital bed at Ascension St. John, Alicia has been able to provide small details about the moments leading up to the attack.

Her sister-in-law, Kat Kelley, said Alicia remembers pulling up to the gate before hearing a "deep growl."

"Something just pounced on her and knocked her to the ground," said Kelley. "She says it was dog-like is what she described, but she didn't say it was certainly a dog."

Alicia has already undergone four surgeries to treat extensive wounds to her face, legs and arms.

I rented a terrific house on top of a ridge in Big Sur. Kids had a terrific time, Owner told us only bottles and cans went in the garbage, just toss anything edible “over the edge” where the wild boar would eat it.

Had to be careful that those horrible critters didn’t eat my two Welsh Corgis or my cat.

More likely a cane corso or dogo argentino. Corsos are almost as popular as pits now.

Or a mangy bear. Animals look weird when they have mange.

I just looked at a satellite photo view. Blanco is small and impressively remote, with a great deal of forest and undeveloped country around it and even more nearby. A vulnerable human family appearing suddenly would look like a gift to an inexperienced juvenile predator looking make to a kill.

I’ve seen some pretty impressive bear pictures from game cameras in Pittsburg County. That said it might be a mountain lion that tore her up.

There is a high concentration of bears in that area, and females would have young cubs now, and will be hungry after the winter and extra protective of their cubs. In may the male cubs will be driven off by their mothers and trying to find territory of their own away from other males, stupid and hungry without their moms. Bears are opportunistic feeders, omnivores likely to approach houses looking for garbage than obligate carnivores like big cats or wolves which tend to be much shyer than coyotes. I don’t think there are any wolves in Oklahoma in any case.

But there are a lot of bears and some mountain lion sightings. And there are dogs which aren’t shy at all. She was in the yard and maybe startled a bear that was in her garbage.

Avoiding cyrptos, it might be north of its current range but within the extremities of its historical range, let me toss in the jaguar. Maybe one decided to go on a walk-about.

“A McAlester mother is clinging to life at a Tulsa hospital following a brutal attack by an unidentified animal that investigators said is unlike anything they’ve seen in over 30 years.” Yeay, I got one of those around here, kind of jack-rabbit, cotton tail hybrid, 3 feet tall, I think it wanted to kill me on my journey to the mailbox

There is a Boggy Creek in Southeastern Oklahoma, too. It’s about thirty miles south of Blanco.
