JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WSMV) - A petition has been launched in an effort to remove a Washington County Board of Education member and the district’s superintendent over comments made toward a student during an early-April meeting.
During a BOE meeting that was streamed on YouTube on April 2, board member Keith Ervin can be heard saying the following to a student he was sitting next to:
“God, you’re hot. Do you know that? Where do you go to school at?”
Directly after Ervin’s comments to the student, laughter can be heard throughout the meeting and then the meeting continues on, seemingly with no acknowledgement of the exchange.
Not long after the meeting, a petition was launched in an effort to remove Ervin and Washington County Schools Superintendent Jerry Boyd. So far, it’s garnered nearly 2,500 signatures.
“It is imperative that we take action now to hold these officials accountable. We demand the immediate removal of both Jerry Boyd and Keith Ervin from their positions on the Washington County Board of Education. Their continued presence undermines the trust and safety of the students they are meant to serve,” the petition partially reads.
The Washington County BOE reports that an emergency meeting has been called for Wednesday, April 8, to address this incident.
“One of our colleagues, Keith Ervin, made a grossly inappropriate comment toward our student Board member. Mr. Ervin has explained that he meant nothing offensive and that we have simply misunderstood his intentions,” the board said.
“Mr. Ervin knows his own intentions, but the rest of us have to judge his words and his actions. What we saw was shocking. He objectified and diminished a young woman publicly. No explanation can justify that.”
During the emergency meeting, the BOE is set to consider and approve a motion to censure Ervin over the comments.
WSMV4 has reached out to Boyd, Ervin and other school board members regarding the petition and Ervin’s comments.
Brad Arnett, one of the people claiming to have created the petition, released the following statement to WSMV4:
“An update regarding the petition filed to seek the removal of Keith Ervin and Jerry Boyd from the Washington County school board. This effort has always been about one thing—our children. We are continuing to make steady progress and are committed to taking every step available to us to ensure the board takes accountability and realizes why this situation is not okay and could have been prevented. Our goal is to not allow this to keep happening, to make sure that every student knows that they are seen, heard, and respected in an environment that is safe, supportive, and free from discomfort or humiliation. As parents and community members, we will continue to advocate for a school system that reflects the values we expect for our children—fairness, dignity, and respect. We will not stop pushing forward until those standards are upheld. I appreciate the continued support from the community and encourage everyone to stay motivated and keeping their voices loud about this issue.
”I became involved because I reside in Washington County, I went to school my entire life in these schools. The things that are happening now have happened for as long as I can remember. It’s the “good ole boy” system. They protect each other and let each other get away with whatever they want, and it needs to stop. As a father of both a boy and a girl, I was appalled by the video, as anyone who is a decent human being should be. Keith Ervin has taken full advantage of his position way too many times and it needs to end here. The positions they hold are a privilege and they have done nothing but abuse the power and make the moral values of the school board non existent."
Looks like one of our own county Commission owners and about as smart. Stupid ass.
Correct. “Gosh, you’re like totally hot. I drew this picture of you. It’s probably my best work. Do you like tater tots?”!
You could see it on the old tonight show, everyone knew that teen girls were cute and adults used to joke and remark on it, mention their ripeness and such (there is a lot of eternal and historical biology involved), this guy’s was overboard and gross though, inappropriate, his chair should be moved away from hers and he can see whatever comes from the local reaction.
Not only was his comment completely inappropriate, but asking her which schools she attends tells me he intended to follow up by pursuing her afterwards.
No excuse whatsoever. Step down, be fired. If there isn’t a code of conduct it’s long overdue.
If an adult in a position of authority made a comment like that to my daughter…. He might want to go into hiding- because my girl would be out to kick his ass long before I got even got in the truck to go do so.
That is a typo I shall not tolerate!
Anyone know how she was dressed (or undressed)?
Thanks to the democrats School Boards are full of Perverts
Whoa…he’s a hottie himself!
Completely out of line...at least it wasn’t a boy.
Beat me to it.
Another Chuck Berry tune (made famous by Johnny Rivers):
Last time I saw Marie she was wavin’ me goodbye
With “hurry-home” drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
We were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
She tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
Marie is only six years old, information please
You got to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee
“The low-T Boomer Goobers here and their outrage....”
Why are you insulting other Freepers? Carry your garbage to X.
About his daughter, no?
Tbh
The culture driven by old Karens has made it so young women are not permitted to be involved with older men.
And older men are not permitted to be attracted to younger women.
I will be castigated for this but I think that schooling should go to age 14. After that either further schooling or paid apprenticeship to trades or specialties. Marriage available by 15 or 16 to those who wish. No supports for unwed mothers, and babies out of wedlock belong to the mother. Fathers claim comes with marriage and paternity test.
Many of the problems we have with teenagers comes from the fact that we hold them back from starting their independent lives when they are physically and emotionally ready.
Is it for everyone? No. But the options need to be there and honored.
People are so used to making comments online and anonymously that they express every stupid thought that comes into their head.
This fool just happened to do it in front of an open mic.
That was Marie’s daddy singing.
She didn’t look very good to me. The kind of person that is almost invisible. /s
Seriously, what a loser that man is!
