Microsoft used to push its AI services towards its user base, especially with the launch of the Copilot+ PC, but it seems that even the company itself does not trust its creation. According to the Microsoft Copilot Terms of Use, which was updated in October last year, the AI large language model (LLM) is designed for entertainment use only, and users should not use it for important advice. While this may be a boilerplate disclaimer, it’s quite ironic given how hard the company wants people to use Copilot for business uses and has integrated it into Windows 11.
“Copilot is for entertainment purposes only. It can make mistakes, and it may not work as intended,” the document said. “Don’t rely on Copilot for important advice. Use Copilot at your own risk.” This isn’t limited to Copilot, too. Other AI LLMs have similar disclaimers. For example, xAI says “Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving and is probabilistic in nature; therefore, it may sometimes: a) result in Output that contains “hallucinations,” b) be offensive, c) not accurately reflect real people, places or facts, or d) be objectionable, inappropriate, or otherwise not suitable for your intended purpose.”

I routinely use duckai, Grok, chatgpt and gemini for research. I will ask all 4 the same question, and it is amazing how the answers can be different and often wrong.
I’ve found many of the answers regarding historical subjects wrong, subjects I was a part of back in the day and knew the correct answer. The questions were asked to verify my past knowledge and quite disappointingly they do give out wrong info.
I’ve noticed they search the web for answers. If they go to places like Wiki they can and will get wrong info. I’m certain other websites are full of lies too.
“Trust but verify.”
It is not completely useless. I have used it to generate code in OpenSCAD for geometric models. That being said, it can and does make mistakes. I had to suffer with it for it’s belief that trig functions required arguments in radians, when in fact it was in degrees. Once I quoted the user manual, it finally agreed, but made no apology.
for entertainment only.
How many people get their facts of life from tv, movies and ads?
Sure, but you’ll still enjoy all the crapware like trying to entice you to join their cloud.
Billions wasted on EVs and Trillions wasted on AI , LOL
It’s purpose is to use AI to determine if you are a “terrorist” that needs additional scrutiny from the government.
I’m geeky with Excel and use it throughout my workday to develop analytics, models, combine different data sets, reporting, etc. Just startled testing copilot in excel last week, and had it write some formulas for me. Went well, it provided some observations of the data and recommended actions. So I asked it to create a dashboard. It then provided me a picture of what it would look like and asked if I wanted it built…
My takeaways: 1) I can write some formulas faster than describing what I want, but could become an issue of me explaining differently. 2) This will save me time, lots of time, especially on more complex work, and 3) it will allow me to produce some things beyond my skill level. I also know that I will need to test everything until I personally can trust it.
No, no, it is great.
Like your neighbor putting a “Gun free zone” on his front lawn. It draws the burglars, away from you.
Anyone who still has Copilot on their PC (since it is easy to remove) will draw the hackers — and leave me alone.
I thought you might also be interested in these versions generated from the prompt “music in the style of Bach’s Aria from the Goldberg Variations primarily piano with soft classical guitar accompaniment”:

And then of course I generated another piece with violins and strings

Sounds like similar experiences. I don’t trust it to make decisions, but I trust it to do the manual data gathering. If I had a human assistant, I would double check their work as well, so it just saves time. For instance, when I was at University, it would take me hours to go through books, etc., to find the data that I needed. Now these ‘assistants’ can do the tedious, long work.
It’s good advice to not use AI for advice.
Yeah, I use it for powershell but you really need to select ‘deep dive’ mode otherwise it will half-ass it sometimes. Definitely don’t use Ai for opinions or political news.
Microsoft has pushed Copilot aggressively in government offices. We found it mostly as a thing to ridicule. It had so many errors of fact and implausibility.
Far, far too many.
So you listen to me. Listen to me. Television is not the truth. Television is a goddamn amusement park. Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players. We're in the boredom killing business.
So if you want the truth go to God. Go to your gurus. Go to yourselves! Because that's the only place you're ever going to find any real truth.
But man, you're never going to get any truth from us. We'll tell you anything you want to hear. We lie like hell. We'll tell you that, uh, Kojak always gets the killer, and that nobody ever gets cancer in Archie Bunker's house, and no matter how much trouble the hero is in, don't worry, just look at your watch. At the end of the hour, he's going to win.
But you people sit there; day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds. We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you! You're dressed like the tube. You eat like the tube. You raise your children like the tube. You even think like the tube! This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God's name you people are the real thing! We are the illusion!

On reflection, all media CAN BE used for good also.
Think back o stories of Aesops Fables, proverbs, etc.
We didn’t do our job in telling stories in the past, but there is still work to be done............

Und you VILL eat the bugsssssss...
I've heard works from Suno and I know what it can do. My test was for Copilot; to see if it could write a piece of music in a very specific style. It worked but it involved using music writing programs and not just prompts. The results from Copilot were close to what I wanted.
The point of my story is that Copilot is a useful tool and I was surprised how it appeared (programmed) to sincerely care about helping me succeed. Even during frustrating tasks it asked me to do, it was remarkably encouraging, cheering me on, "you can do it!"
For the record, this is what I was striving for.
I’ve been doing historical research for many years on a relatively arcane 19th century subject area - most being examination of the historiography and prior referenced sources, as well as previously undiscovered primary resources.
It becomes very apparent that AI (rather, LLM’s) are just giant plagiarizing tools, and they regurgitate the most common information available via the web. Much of which is garbage - AI results will be weighted based on mass of material processed, not inherent quality or accuracy.
In this area, it’s a menace.
