Artemis II crew faces Microsoft Outlook hitch hours after takeoff

ET phone IT!

The Artemis II crew’s early tasks were disrupted by an issue with the shuttle’s Microsoft Outlook less than a day after blasting off into Earth’s orbit.

Reid Wiseman, the mission’s commander, reported the problem with the email app to the Houston-based mission control just seven hours after the rocket’s historic launch.

“I also see that I have two Microsoft Outlooks and neither one of those are working,” Wiseman could be heard saying over dispatch.

“If you want to remote in and check the Optimus and those two Outlooks that would be awesome,” he added.

Mission control said that they would join through the shuttle’s PCD, or their personal computing device, to patch the problem.

The PCD’s are specialized tablets the astronauts use to manage more menial tasks, like emailing clients back on Earth and parsing through mission manuals, throughout their 10-day voyage.

Wiseman was seen using one of the PCDs just before Wednesday’s takeoff, stunning eagle-eyed NASA fans who quickly made note of his now-formerly top secret passcode.

So, what if one of the “historical” 2X astronauts has a baby on the moon, does the kid automatically become an American citizen anchor baby? Just asking for a friend. What if they have one on the space station?

Just dig out your old ones from when Alan Shepard returned in the Space Shuttle! 🙂

First the throne, then their outlook. There was a communications blackout in the mix as well.

With all of the sketchy devices and services involved (but it should all work out, minus the dignity), perhaps it's finally dawned on them (and everyone else) that Artemis II is supposed to be a 10-day comedy tour. At that price...

(A little levity for the entire planet to enjoy, because that's how Abraham's God rolls. Why else would the commander be a veritable Wise guy?)

“I appreciate you wanting to get people interested in rocket science, but maybe don’t broadcast that the PIN to unlock the tablet on the rocket is either 9393 or 3939,” one viewer wrote on X.

It's all in the timing -- just ask a Jewish comedian. Where do people think they got that from?

Artemis II launched ~ hour before sundown at the beginning of Passover (the birthday of the Hebrew nation), setting the splashdown NET time for

April 10, 5:21 p.m. PDT (local time)

Isru Chag:

In a responsum to a community that had inquired as to the rationale behind the observance of Isru Chag, Yosef Hayyim (1832–1909) cited Isaac Luria (1534–1572), the founder of Lurianic Kabbalah, to the effect that Jews connect the day after the holiday to the holiday itself due to the remaining “light” of the holiday: in other words, so that the sanctity of the holiday will be extended.[2]

Every word adds up. It's an intrinsic property.

278:

to Abraham [לאברהם] = one seed/ ['זרע א] = seed [זרעא] (Aramaic) =

Isru Chag [אסרו חג] = Ohr HaGanuz, the hidden light [of Creation] אור הגנוז = the spirit of revelation/discovery [רוח הגילוי]

For anyone keeping track of the key data points, Hebrews [עברים] = 322:

NASA's SLS moon rocket is a towering rocket, the space agency's largest since the Saturn V moon rocket of the Apollo program. It stands 322 feet tall, reaches higher than the Statue of Liberty, and requires 750,000 gallons of propellant to fly.

First question is:

Why are they using a known-unreliable operating system? Much better systems out there.

S-band radio, no text messages and no email. Just telemetry, audio, and video. Crappy video, very low resolution.

Say what you will about the current Office Team, but back in the 2000s they threw the best parties at microsoft.

I might even have a Magic 8 ball they gave out as swag.

The admin that ordered those is probably still getting crap today cause the first person who tried it the message that popped up was

“Outlook not so good”

Technology doesn’t like to be shook and experience high G forces. Apollo functioned very well with a small nav computer and human piloting. It’s hard to believe mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs were designed with slide rules.

********************************************
Worksite went from a VAX cluster to windows back in the eighties. Went from no crashes to calling the local IT guy every month or two - “Hey John, come on down and fix this piece of crap. I’ll put some coffee on.” He was a fun guy. He also understood windows maintenance was job security.

Had windows here in wife’s machine. Got tired of “fixing” it a few times a month. Dumped the windows, put Linux Mint on it a year or two ago. Been trouble-free since.
My machines are either RaspberryPi (2) or FreeBSD (4). All are reliable, don’t crash. Most run 24/7.

Several years ago ran a “death watch” on a Linux machine. It got to 476 days uptime before quitting. Had a power fail that lasted longer than the UPS.

I question your definition of “reliable” but that’s OK.
I question my definition of “sanity” on a regular basis.

Take Care.

Would be prudent to have at least a couple critical manuals in paper form in case microsquish does an “update” during the flight....or just even does a normal, SOP glitch

It's a tough crowd.

a 10-day comedy tour

This engine burn is a key manoeuvre that nudges the spacecraft out of Earth's orbit and on its trajectory towards our lunar neighbour.

But 20 minutes after the burn the team received a terrifying 'cabin leak' emergency message.

'We did get a warning message for "cabin leak suspected",' astronaut Hansen said in the crew's first live interview from space.

'This grabs your attention because…

OS/2 still exists. It is marketed by a European company called “Arca Noae.”

Still as stable as ever.

Lots of chatter about the Artemis program’s DEI agenda, but the astronaut club is an elite club regardless.

All whiz kids up there.
