San Francisco homeless nonprofit paid official’s son $10K to make 5 slides for presentation: prosecutors

A homeless nonprofit paid the son of San Francisco’s top human rights boss $10,000 to prepare five slides for a panel his mother moderated — as she was signing city contracts worth millions to the organization, according to prosecutors.

Sheryl Davis, former head of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, was arrested Monday on a slew of public corruption charges stemming from her time leading the scandal-scarred Dream Keeper initiative, a $120 million plan to aid the city’s black communities.

Davis signed city contracts worth more than $3.5 million to Homeless Children’s Network, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that provides substance abuse counseling and other services to at-risk families — and prosecutors say the org then made “questionable” payments to Davis’ young son totaling more than $140,000.

That included a handsome fee of $10,000 to create “five presentation slides for a panel” that Homeless Children’s Network Executive Director appeared on, along with “answers to questions she could be asked.”

Davis’ son, identified in city records as Henry Davis, was paid $140,000 by the nonprofit over less than three years for research services.

Davis’ son has not been accused of wrongdoing, but the payments created “the appearance of impropriety and unfairness,” prosecutors noted.

He was allowed to “insert a description of work he would perform into contracts” and set his own pay schedule and price as part of the plum gig, per the affidavit.

Homeless Children’s Network made payments into an account held jointly by Davis and her son — creating a conflict of interest, prosecutors allege.

Reminds me of when a buddy and I were paid to replace 6 plug cover plates in a community gazebo for $900 in today’s dollars.

The regular cover plates with that one little screw with new ones of the same color, when I blanched at the pay she laughed and said she controlled the funds and she knew we needed the money, she liked us and kept a refrigerator with a keg in it in her kitchen and we drank and ate at her place for months while we painted her little kitchen (what could have been done in about one day), she liked us drinking the free beer all day and her fixing us food and then finishing up the drinking day when she would take us to the happy hour for drinks and food, she even had two daughters if you could get past the Navy SEAL boy fiends, which I did of course.

Weird times in California.

Investigators revealed new details Thursday about an ex-San Francisco department head who allegedly enriched herself through a corrupt scheme of bribes and illegal gifts that went on for years. The city attorney’s office said Sheryl Davis, who resigned in September as Human Rights Commission director, received tens of thousands of dollars from a city-funded organization that benefitted her personal business ventures, expensive travel, and her son’s tuition to UCLA. Davis left the commission after The Standard’s reporting raised questions about her relationship with the nonprofit Collective Impact.

Davis and Collective Impact, led by executive director James Spingola, were already under heavy scrutiny. Last fall, The Standard reported that Davis and Spingola shared a home and a car while the nonprofit received multiple six-figure contracts from the Human Rights Commission. Davis failed to disclose her relationship with Spingola when she personally signed off on the contracts.

Investigators alleged Thursday that Sheryl Davis and James Spingola had been involved in a years-long corruption scheme. | Source:Courtesy Photo

Most nonprofits are scams but the worst of them are the 'homeless' ones.

To be fair, some of those slides were pretty creative!

My rates are more affordable: I generally charge only $500 per bullet-point!

Good grief. You can’t be that obtuse that she needed to send an engraved invitation for the jack pot. LOL
