Official from mediating country: Trump leaning toward ground invasion, convinced Iran will then capitula

An official from one of the countries mediating between the US and Iran tells The Times of Israel that US President Donald Trump appears to be leaning toward ordering a major US ground operation against Iran, with Washington convinced Tehran will buckle under such military pressure.

The official intimately familiar with the mediation efforts says the US privately recognizes that Iran is not likely to agree to the concessions presented in Washington’s 15-point plan and has dispatched thousands of troops to the region in order to capture Tehran’s Kharg Island on Trump’s orders.

A second official from a mediating country warns that while the US may be able to capture the island, holding onto it for an extended period of time will require many more soldiers and an extended period of fighting — far beyond the four-to-six week window that Washington has told the public that the war would last. While Saturday will be the four-week mark, the US still claims to be well ahead of schedule.

Both officials from mediating countries say that the Islamic Republic is not likely to capitulate, regardless of whether a ground operation moves ahead.

They insist that Iran will now agree to terms that it wasn’t willing to accept before the US launched the war.

Trump on Monday announced that he was delaying until Friday his deadline for Iran to agree to his 15-point proposal for ending the war or face a bombing campaign against its power plants.

Thousands of additional US Marine troops are slated to arrive in the region around that new deadline.

The only potential “ground invasion” would be the seizing of some offshore islands. Zero chance we try to take and hold anything on the mainland.

So bombing them back to the stone age wasn’t enough of a deterrence? I vote no for boots on the ground. Too risky.

Go back and read many of the other “Times of Israel” articles, more often than not they are a good bit off base if their is a benefit to Israel to present as such. Much of their bias comes in the form of narratives to encourage the US into positions more supportive of Israel but not always America First.

They are not as bad as the left but they definitely have a slant not always in the best interest of the USA.

Iran is about the size of California, Montana and Texas put together. Or, another way to look at it - Iran and Alaska are about the same size. And the Tehran metro has about 13 million people.
Can anyone tell me what the US will need in manpower to defeat Iran in a ground war?

mideasteye.com excerpt......In the Iran war plan’s initial conception, “Israel emphasized to Trump” the war would begin with the killing of Iranian leaders, followed by a “series of intelligence operations intended to encourage regime change”.

The vaunted Israeli Mossad intel believed, this would lead to a “mass uprising” that would bring about “victory” for Israel and the US.

As the war began, Trump’s public messaging to Americans reflected this thinking. In an eight-minute video statement Trump said: “Finally, to the great, proud people of Iran, I say tonight that the hour of your freedom is at hand…when we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations.”

But talk of “regime change” quickly evaporated. Less than two weeks in, after billions of tax dollars were spent, US Senators came out of a briefing on the war to say that “overthrowing the Islamic Republic was NOT one of its goals.”

In fact, there was “no plan” at all for the military operation.

Actually, if we bombed them to the Stone Age, we’d be bombing them forward in time.

With spears and shovels as weapons, I can't believe anyone believed there would be an uprising.

3,000 paratroopers and 5,000 Marines are in process now. There are maybe 50,000 troops in the entire region.

If they’re to be inserted, it’ll be less of an invasion and more of a special mission.

That said, the political blowback will be immense.

Sounds to me like the military and warmaking infrastructure is pretty much wiped-out, so the only strategic asset Iran has left is Hormuz. They’re not going to give it up without a fight and there will be no lasting peace as long as they control it, so...

No invasion.

We have the capability to put our their lights nation-wide.

Do that.

Maybe take out some bridges and dams while we’re at it.
