Wine, beer or liquor: Study finds one drink is linked to lower risk of death than others

Not all types of alcohol are created equal — and a new study suggests that wine may carry lower health risks than beer or hard liquor. *** Using UK Biobank data, researchers analyzed participant questionnaires. The adults were placed into one of four groups based on their alcohol consumption levels.

The study was observational — meaning the findings show an association but cannot prove cause and effect. *** Analyzing cardiovascular disease deaths, researchers discovered that moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of dying from the disease than people who never drank or occasionally drank — though, once again, the study was observational in nature only. Experts have urged caution in interpreting such findings. “By contrast, even low intake of spirits, beer or cider was associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with drinking never or occasionally,” the American College of Cardiology’s news release said. *** High alcohol consumption also increased overall health risks.

People with high alcohol intake were 24% more likely to die from any cause. ***

Differences in risk by alcohol type emerged at low and moderate levels of consumption, where drinking spirits, beer or cider was associated with a significantly higher risk of death while the same level of wine consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of death,” the release stated.

Basically, wine has tannins. Tannins help make bad cholesterol less sticky to the walls of your arteries.

That would be Resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant in the grape skins.

If you drink it straight, it has some subtle undertones of lemon. However, I never drink it straight...can’t take a chance with those damn mosquitoes.

At the Last Supper, Jesus asked his apostles to drink wine. Was Jesus engaging in “willful destructive” behavior?

Not a response to what I posted in response to what you posted. You posted about getting intoxicated and drunk. None of that occurred at the Last Supper.

Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. 1Timothy 5:23

Yes, Paul was advising Timothy to drink some wine as medicine for his stomach ailments. Again not in the least bit responsive to what I wrote as a response to what I wrote. Scripture is beyond clear many times over that getting drunk is very destructive and sinful behavior - in very descriptive terms.

The meats were brisket and pulled pork. Excellent.

12 different bourbons and I did not take a notepad with me. :p

I can’t blame you. However, if you remember any names of things that you enjoyed, I’m interested.

Truthfully, I’m mostly a rum drinker, but bourbon is first on my list if I’m at a place with subpar rum on it’s beverage list.

I nearly never drink more than one glass of wine in one setting, but I also nearly never drink more than one beer in one setting either, yet on the rarest of occasions, I will have at least two hard liquor drinks in one setting. Strange.

I suppose consumption might depend on a variety of factors, including how much time one has available, whether or not one has quenched one’s thirst otherwise, and perhaps the cost if eating out, among other variables.

Mostly when I see people drinking wine, beer, or liquor it’s a social gathering, so that may impact how much someone drinks as well.

I have a single glass of wine a couple nites a week in the evening before dinner at home, and that is usually only when I drink wine.

Ordering drinks at bars or restaurants is pricey enough so, when that is the venue I usually figure why pay too much for wine or beer, might as well have a hard liquor drink - whiskey sour.

I’ve taken to having an old fashioned since most bartenders know how to make that. Very few places have decent rum or decent rum drinks, and that’s my usual at home.

I don’t drink beer at all. Or more properly, I have rules for when I drink beer, so that I drink beer very very rarely.

I’m all over the place on wine. Usually something semi sweet is where I go. I’ll go with a Malbec or red blend if I’m drinking a red. For white, I’ll go with a drier Riesling or a nice Chablis. Sometimes I’ll have a Prosecco, but I really dislike Moscato that some of my friends like. I’m picky on Chardonnays, and not a fan of Pinot Grigio. I do use Sauvignon Blanc for cooking. That almost always works in a dish calling for white wine.

I do not drink beer very quickly and my delight with it diminishes as it quits being cold, which ends with me often not finishing a glass or bottle (never a can) and occasionally (if out) get another “cold one” - and then not finish it either.

With wine I seem to be stuck on Cabernet Sauvignon - by many different sources domestic and foreign. I will try others on occasion but always fall back to my preference.

My rules for drinking beer are:
1.) It has to be over 90 degrees outside, and sunny. No rain!
2.) The beer must be ICE COLD!
3.) Only Red Stripe beer.
4.) Jimmy Buffett playing for the music.
5.) Preferably, I should be on a white sandy beach or on a nice boat.

These rules have only coincided for me once in my life. My BIL made sure to make it happen ONE TIME, so I obliged by keeping my end of the deal. ;)
