For decades, Gene Shalit was a familiar and unmistakable presence on morning television. With his trademark bushy mustache, colorful bow ties, and quick wit, he became one of the most recognizable film critics in the country. Now, Shalit has reached an extraordinary milestone—celebrating his 100th birthday on March 25.

Is his mustache still alive?
Wow. Gene’s still around! He was always so pleasant and good natured on the air. I grew up hearing, sometimes watching him on morning TV. Gene must have decided a long time ago, not to write a string of “Tell All” books about how his co-hosts acted behind the scenes. Good for Gene that he had other things to do than seek some kind of revenge.
I hope he’s as well as could be expected.
I was so surprised to see this I nearly put it under ‘news’ because to me it is! Nice to see he’s still with us and yes, nicer days.
Happy birthday, Gene :)
> He was always so pleasant and good natured on the air. <
Yes. That was back when you could watch a mainstream news program and not automatically get upset.
Wow yes I liked him and for sure did not think he was still with us.
I have only fond memories of him. I did not see him often, as I was in school, but when I did I found his voice, his incredibly unusual hair, and his mannerisms, strangely captivating and alarming, at the same time. I trusted his view, though.
What a nice walk back in my memory, seeing him.
I hope, as you do, that he is doing okay.
The photos!!
What a character!
Always had a big smile on his face. Hope he still does.
SD Inspiration?
Everyone’s gone to the movies
Now we’re alone at last.
I know you’re used to 16 or more
Sorry, I’ve only got 8
Since I have no idea what his political leanings are, he must have done it RIGHT.
Back when movie reviews and movie reviewers were non-political. I miss those days. As others mentioned, he was always smiling and in a good mood. That’s how I remember him. Not ranting and raving about diversity in movies.
Gene was a favorite part of the old Today Show.
Amazed and glad he is still around.
Absolutely right. You didn’t have the horrible harpies on shows like The View. You didn’t have nonstop TDS. You had pleasant people like Jane Pauley and Gene Shalit to start your day. I rarely watched any of the morning shows, but when I did glance at them, they always seemed like nice people.
Wow.
I wish I could find it but Jon Lovitz did a great impersonation on SNL.
Happy belated 100th birthday, Gene!
Went to school with one of his daughters. Both he and Marvin Kitman lived in my old home town.
