Rep. Thomas Massie is on the brink of securing a huge win for small farmers.
His PRIME Act is officially included in the 2026 Farm Bill.
If this passes, it will deliver a blow to Big Ag’s stranglehold on the meatpacking industry.
“This would make it easier for local farmers to sell directly to local consumers using a local slaughterhouse.”
How?
It would cut the USDA out of inspections for local processing facilities.
“You don’t need the USDA to inspect a facility that has seven employees.”
“So what I’ve proposed is that you could just have the local health inspection… inspecting these slaughterhouses.”
“As long as you don’t cross state lines, you shouldn’t need the federal government’s involvement in this processing.”
“The good news is, I got that in the Farm Bill.”

Huge win for US farmers. The bill is out of committee and due to be voted on!
Rep. Massie getting it done.
I hope this passes. Good one for small farmers and people tired of chem food.
This, in a way, is how we get our venison every season. M'lady and I would happily buy all our meats from a local slaughterhouse.
I believe this is one of those “must pass “ bills so it’s likely to pass and he said his amendment is in tact
I give Massie a win for this one. I am usually very critical of him but this is something he has done that is a true good.
Thank you Massie if you can get this over the finish line.
Nice comments!
It’s great to have stupid regulations removed and you can benefit from local produce. It’s a win-win
Is it different depending on the State? Here in Oklahoma, we have small meat processors who raise, butcher and sell their own beef.
This will lift federal inspections and make it easier maybe those places have been through the process ? I’m not sure.
Local beef raisers here sell beef directly to consumers.
Yes, this would be a great thing. Bring more control to the local level. Thank you, Massie.
I’d buy my meat from a local farm every day of the week and twice on Sunday, if I could.
If you can save 0.50$ on a pound, thats $500 saved to fill up a freezer.
I purchase from a local farmer. Many do in our county. I call my guy and order the beef. The slaughter house calls to see how I want it packaged. They call again when it is well wrapped and frozen. I pay for the meat when I pick it up, and they pay the farmer. This is a good bill.
I agree!
Our local inspectors are strict as heck. Constantly closing restaurants to clean up to standards. Hopefully these small farms have high standards as they will need them or will be closed down for a week or until cleaned to the inspector’s standards.

Good point. Of course, purchasers will want to know that the food is safe and clean. But letting it be done by local, small operators (assuming sanitary conditions, etc.) would be a plus in my opinion.
Good on this one!!
Why does he have to be a retard other times?
Stuff like this for the win!!!
I agree. It’s just local tends to have higher standards because their body of work is smaller compared to national which includes a huge swath of businesses and farms.
