UK will lead ‘Hormuz Coalition’ to reopen strait after Iran left behind deadly sea mines

The UK’s is set to lead a coalition of countries including the France to help sweep the Strait of Hormuz for mines and reopen it to oil tanker traffic, according to a report.

London is working to organize a summit of 30-some nations that had agreed to provide “appropriate efforts” to reopen the strait, according to Politico.

Additionally, the UK said it is looking to send a either a Royal Navy mine sweeper ship or hire a civilian ship that can launch mine sweeping drones into the area, The Times reported.

Iran still has at least a dozen mines in the narrow shipping lane that are imperiling commercial shipping traffic, according to a report.

The underwater explosives were identified as Iranian-manufactured Maham 3 and Maham 7 limpet mines, US officials told CBS News.

The explosives threaten any ship that dares cross the Strait of Hormuz, effectively shutting down a key trade route for the transport of 20% of the world’s oil supplies.

However, the British government believes there is a safe path through the strait, according to a new report, as a few tankers made it safely through the chokepoint.

The Maham 3 mines, which weigh more than 660 pounds, use magnetic and acoustic sensors, with the bomb capable of attaching itself to ships that come within 10 feet, according to the Collective Awareness to Unexploded Ordnance website.

I can see Trump laughing and shaking his head at this description of the UK’s leadership.

This is their oil supplies, not ours.
We have plenty, we can export.
They can’t. Why are we doing the
expensive military stuff?

How they going to clear the mountains from missile launch sites that fill the mountains along the coast for 250 miles. Roughly it’s like securing the Pacific coast from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz, mountains and all.

A couple of Euro ships sailing beside a tanker means nothing. This is a much bigger problem than mines.

Notice the use of the term "left behind" - like empty paper cups after an outdoor event.

No, the Iranians intentionally put the mines there.

I’m disagree. When global economic security is threatened the incentive to kill those who threaten it goes sky high. Countries occasionally fight for honor and glory but they will always go to war over energy, the lifeblood of modern economies.

Even China and Russia are telling the Iranians to back off and surrender If the mullahs keep it up for much longer the Chinese will start killing them.

I thought that I read that the Shia mines were in some fashion mobile.

UK hasn’t done squat. They haven’t done anything other than show fear. I believe they’re in great fear of their own muslim population.

And, when it comes to war, it’s probably best to ask them to get out of the way.

last thing i read was the european nations weren’t gonna do jackshit UNLESS and UNTIL a CEASE FIRE had been implemented ...

A. have they changed their minds about that required condition before they would “help”?

B. how quickly will they skedaddle when the cease fire is broken?

also, why should the UK lead a naval coalition when they’ve been able to finally get only a single blue-water boat out of dock?

i can envision the following hypothetical scenario-

1. trump is getting blamed for increasing hormuz traffic danger in the international theater of public opinion

2. western governments excluding the usa want hormuz shipping danger to subside back to normal

3. trump and oil starved western governments hatch a secret plan to take over hormuz possibly up to and involving easter iran

4. trump does a publicity head fake and pretends to forge peace with (notoriously untrustworthy) iran mullahs

5. usa surprise attacks hormuz strait and western iran, taking over both

6. usa mops up land resistance, clears hormuz mines, hands off hormuz to oil starved western alliance

rationale

given where we are today, securing hormuz oil/gas shipping is imperative to the western oil starved nations

usa is the only nation that can take hormuz

handoff is relatively easy (several weeks or months)

ideally all of this was envisioned before the first bombing raids began.

(i would just guess blindly that there is nothing radically new contained in this post)

glancing at a map, if iran were to be partitioned, imho an ideal line would extend from sari on the caspian sea to bandar-e mahshahr on the south. the line would be about 1200 km (750 miles) long through hilly terrain. the actual line would bulge towards the west to incorporate a major north-south highway to disallow that highway from being used by iran for a counterattack and allow it to be used for defense of the partition.

the hope would be that the existence of a somewhat liberated eastern iran would encourage rebel forces in western iran to revolt and take over western iran.

the worst case is that western iran would continue to be dominated by mullahs, which in turn would require periodic subduing via bombing by the usa. the latter implies a presumption that trump’s anti-nuclear-iran policy becomes permanent.
