President Trump said on Tuesday that the U.S. war in Iran has been won, but that he coudn’t say exactly when it would end.
“I think we’re going to end it. I can’t tell you for sure. You know, I don’t like to say this, this war has been won. The only one that likes to keep it going is the fake news,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office following the swearing in of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Trump has repeatedly given contrasting signals about the war, at one moment suggesting talks are taking place that could lead to its end, at another suggesting that new attacks could take place.
On Tuesday, he emphasized what the U.S. had already achieved.
“We literally have planes flying over Tehran and other parts of their country. They can’t do a thing about it,” he said. Trump also referred to the killing of Iranian leaders and subsequent changes to the country’s leadership during the conflict as “regime change.”
“This is really a change in the regime because the leaders are all very different than the ones that we started out with,” the president said.
The new supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, is the son of the supreme leader killed in the first day of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Khamenei has not been seen in public since Iran said he had become supreme leader.
On Monday, Trump announced he was ordering the Pentagon to pause strikes on Iranian military facilities for five days amid negotiations between Washington and Tehran.Iranian officials have denied that direct negotiations are taking place between the two countries.
On Tuesday, the spokesperson of Iran’s top military command, Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, said armed forces would fight “until complete victory,” the AP reported.
At least 1,500 people have been killed and 18,551 injured in Iran since the first wave of joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, according to figures shared with state TV from Iran’s health ministry.
Trump is facing political and economic pressure to find an exit to the war. Iranian attacks on the Strait of Hormuz have all but closed a vital corridor for shipping the region’s war, leading to a global energy crisis.
This has raised the price at the pump in the U.S. by around $1 per gallon. This has added to a negative midterm election environment for Republicans.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also highlighted U.S. military achievements in the war, while pledging that the conflict in Iran would not turn out like the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Never has a modern military been so rapidly and historically obliterated, defeated from day one with overwhelming firepower,” Hegseth told reporters.
“We negotiate with bombs,” he continued. “You have a choice as we loiter over the top of Tehran as the president talked about, about your future. The president has made it clear you will not have a nuclear weapon.”
“This is not Iraq and Afghanistan. This is not a president who is interested in vague end states. He’s been very clear with us about what we need to accomplish,” he said.
The U.S. in the last week has sent additional troops to the region that could be used in some kind of ground operation, particularly on Kharg Island, where Iran’s largest oil depot stands.
But doing so could greatly raise U.S. casualties — and political pain for the administration.

And the regime still possesses highly enriched uranium.
And the regime's prisons are filled with dissidents.
And the Strait is blocked by the regime.
Perhaps the Administration is downplaying victory to conceal plans for a further offensive, but I don't think settling for the status quo warrants calling Epic Fury a victory.
I agree. I remember what Islam does.
I’m in for it’s utter elimination.
The gay son has not been seen and is likely dead.
I think you are not from Miami, but from Chicago?
Did you meet your hero in a bath house there?
Your goals and aims and alliances seem to coincide
with that person…I would think you want to send more cash?
What won’t you do for cash?
The mullahs know all they have to do is wait out Trump. Their biggest ally in the world is the democrat party.
We stopped Gulf War I too soon and it eventually resulted in Gulf War II.
FINISH THE JOB THIS TIME!
Who & the TF do you think this is going to turn out better?
Hillary? Biden? Kamala?
As Thomas Sowell has wisely put it
“compared to what?”
You want ground troops?
AMEN!!!
Agree, no point of doing this again. A lot of damage done, may as well finish it. There are groups who are hiding ready to get going once the bombing starts. This may be that phase. We will see.
Taco Trump done turning tail and scooting out of the ME it would seem.
You have become the enemy of America
Where is Ernie at today?
Including to our economy.
And to Trump and MAGA's reputation for being America First and No Foreign Wars.
may as well finish it.
Yeah, it will only cost us additional tens of billions of dollars, wasted ordnance, and lives lost.
And there's still a chance the Democrats might only win a majority in the midterms. Let's keep this war going so the Democrats will win a super majority.
You are so wise.
You ask a good question. But do you? Because I can’t figure it out. So share your insights.
Trump believes that anyone reports the war as anything but a move of perfection is wanting it to continue.
The dynamic duo the petite petty and a ‘rebel’ from “miami”— sure thing. Hare krishna to a couple of all know nothing jokers. But... such conviction and commitment they have, woweee!!
Played by the press and so very much they want to believe them. Y’all want fries with that insta results?
I don’t care who controls the Senate but I know that fighting a war because you’re afraid of perception is a great way to lose a war. I don’t need a finger in the wind mentality. If you didn’t want to fight the war the time for that decision was about a month ago. Now that you’re in it, win.
