A year after the actor’s death, a generative AI version of Val Kilmer will co-star in an independent film, in one of the boldest uses yet of artificial intelligence in moviemaking.
First Line Films announced Wednesday that Kilmer has posthumously joined the cast of a film titled “As Deep as the Grave.” The producers said that, before his death, Kilmer had signed on to perform in the movie but was unable to because of his health.
Kilmer’s estate gave permission for his digital replication, and is being compensated for it. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, said the role resonated with her father.
“He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling,” she said in a statement. “This spirit is something that we are all honoring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part."

Reminiscent of animated Leonard Nimoy in Fringe (when he was too sick to want to be seen live).
Yeah, get ready for the Brokeback Mountain Series.
Horrible.
They already did this with Ian Holm - IMO one of the British acting greats - for one of the (inumerable, mediocre and forgettable) Alien sequels. The only reason I watched the movie was to see how well they recreated Holm.
He’ll always be Himmler, who he portrayed in Holocaust.
Over the years, Kilmer dated Cher, Lesley Ann Warren, Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie, Daryl Hannah and Ellen Barkin.
As long as the estate approves and consumers buy it, why not?
I would certainly like to see James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and so many others in modern film.
BUT the estates must very carefully review the screenplay and the AI rendition of the deceased actor. Like, who wants to see John Wayne alongside gay Bob and the rumpriders?
Title change? IMDB has it both ways.

They’ve forgotten how to make movies and now a new gimmick
Please no.
I wish they would’ve done a torn up prosthetic, and distorted the voice like they did with Lance Henricksen for Alien 3; what they did with the likeness of the late Ian Holm in Romulus wasn’t that great.
We have no need for real living actors any longer now that AI exists...
Gimmick?
You clearly don’t know how movies are made.
It’s all fake. What you call gimmicks are special effects. Used since movies were first created.
Moving rolls of background became blue screens which became green screens. Models became CGI and now fancier computers use AI.
Gimmicks?
You don’t think George Lucas actually built spaceships do you?
Wouldn’t that be GREAT!?!
Are you really ready for a queer John Wayne?
Really cut the costs...LOL
Really cut the costs...LOL
I don’t even want to imagine that.
