Bosses are firing Gen Z grads just months after hiring them—here’s what they say needs to change

After complaining for years that Gen Z grads are difficult to work with, bosses are no longer all talk, no action: Now they’re rapidly firing young workers who aren’t up to scratch just months after hiring them.

The numbers are stark. According to a survey, six in 10 employers admitted they had already sacked the Gen Z workers they had hired fresh out of college.

Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. business leaders. It found that the class of 2024’s shortcomings are shaping how bosses hire next—and it’s not good news for future grads.(snip)

So where is it going wrong for fresh-faced graduates?

Employers’ gripe with young people today is their lack of motivation or initiative—50% of the leaders surveyed cited that as the reason why things didn’t work out with their new hire.

Bosses also pointed to Gen Z being unprofessional, unorganized, and having poor communication skills as their top reasons for having to sack grads.

Leaders say they have struggled with the latest generation’s tangible challenges, including being late to work and meetings often, not wearing office-appropriate clothing, and using language appropriate for the workspace.

Now, more than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work.

If you do the hiring and firing, why can’t you get the employees you want?

And if you didn’t have a job in high school, you were a loser.

If I didn't work, I couldn't afford gas or beer money!

I wouldn’t have been able to pay for my own apartment in high school if I hadn’t worked.

Amen. Show up early, work hard, be polite, and stay late. It’s not complicated.

...tell me what is Ohm’s Law?

Asking about Ohm's Law as if that's a measure of education is part of the problem.

Very, very few people need to know Ohm's Law and those that do could have learned on the job.

They don't teach civics nor personal finance in schools anymore because they can't have the peasants realizing how bad they're being screwed.

This has been more than a century in the making.

An equal part of the blame can be managers who don't know what their doing hiring the wrong person for the position.

Sadly you are partly right.

HR is who writes the requirements, selects who will get through to be interviewed and they rarely have any idea what the actual requirements of the job are.

The department managers usually have little or no say as to who they will be interviewing.

Once had a case where they had a temp that had been in the job for a few months and was doing great. The boss told her to apply for the job. Her CV never hit his desk so he assumed that she didn't want the job. So he went with another candidate. On her last day he told her that he was sorry to see her go and she asked, "then why didn't you at least interview me?"

HR had decided that she "was not a good fit" because she did not have a degree and had put her application in file 13. She had been doing the job just fine without one. But they knew better.

Boomers not retiring is a big reason for lots of the issues with jobs and affordability today.

That is really funny because just a few years ago it was that all the Boomers were retiring early and those poor wittle replacements just were so overworked.

Be nice if Generation Zilch would pick an excuse and stick to it but they have never stuck with anything in their life so why would this be any different?

This online poll was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted on Pollfish in August 2024. In total, 966 business leaders - c-level executive, human resources manager, director, president, owner/partner, and senior management - completed the survey.

What kind of “business leader” spends his/her free time getting polled? Most likely, a self-obsessed smartest-guy-in-the-room type who believes he is doing all of us little people a favor by giving us his richly-sought views on the world, who in reality should probably be put on a performance plan.

Further, any manger who fires a new hire just months after hiring, has zero interviewing skills. Or, he is an aging ICE protester who inhabits the workforce and hired a GenZ ICE protester out of affinity bias and fired the kid when HIS boss noticed declining productivity.

My experience with GenZ grads is they are driven, focused, have a strong work ethic, and are great reverse-mentoring resources. They saw their elders push vaccines from 2021-2023 and can be excused if they look at Boomers with skepticism or disdain.

YMMV.

In related trends the infusion of AI into everything these days is quite the impetus for employers to not even bother hiring people right out of college.

In the AI age, wasting 4 prime years being indoctrinated by hallucinating whack jobs, and foolishly going into debt for the privilege, will make someone unemployable in the free market. There's never been an easier time to make it as an imposter, even compete successfully with old timers. Fake it until you make it has become solid advice. Companies could try hiring motivated 18 year olds with AI skills, and without leftist college mental damage.

Well, that’s a crap attitude to have, especially in my field of healthcare.
If you’re that dumb and lazy we don’t need your pampered ass working with us.
We have a job to do, that keeping people alive.
If you can’t meet workplace expectations, you’re the failure.
Cope with that you lazy twats.

Because you don’t work with enough of the demographic. Their precious “mental health” really is pathetic, with initiative and integrity horrifically degraded from earlier generations through ill-education paired with deep tech addiction. The American character has been fundamentally changed without sufficient notice.

This comment proves you’ve never held a real job of Importance and are jealous.
Bet you’re one of those loudmouth idiots at work who thinks they have all the answers with zero experience and jerk off every chance you get.
You’re the weak link, but think you’re entitled to all the perks and none of the sweat.
