Climate change is speeding up — the pace nearly doubled in ten years

The rate of global warming has surged since 2015 and is now nearly double what it was in the 1970s, according to a study1 that tackles one of the hottest debates among climate scientists.

Because the past three years have shattered temperature records (see ‘Temperature boost’), researchers have been exploring whether global warming is accelerating, and if so, why. Many scientists agree that the rate at which it is increasing has picked up. This is mainly because of a reduction in air pollution following the introduction of fuel regulations for international shipping (which has resulted in fewer pollutant particles that reflect sunlight into space and seed insulating clouds). In the data, “you can practically see by eye that it has accelerated”, says Stefan Rahmstorf, a climate scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany.

Rahmstorf and Grant Foster, a statistician in Orono, Maine, say they have the strongest evidence yet that global warming has sped up, to a rate of around 0.35 ºC per decade. That’s faster than some other estimates2. But, the pair say their analysis provides a more accurate picture because of how it accounts for and removes the effects of natural factors, such as weather events and volcanic eruptions, that cause climate fluctuations. The study was published today in Geophysical Research Letters.

It’s entertaining, but dangerous. Best antidote is mockery.

“double what it was in the 1970s”

Well, in the 1970s we were in the middle of the coming Ice Age.

We have had some of the coldest weather in years.

These nitwits are downright in need of mental help.

"We had tons of snow this winter it’s wearing me out and it’s not done yet , I want my GLOBAL WARMING"

We did too. There are still piles of snow in the parking lot of my apartment complex. It's 63 outside, with rain and possible thunderstorms expected. I live in Rome, NY and there are flood warnings from this afternoon until Thursday evening for the north country. On Thursday, it's supposed to have wind chills in the teens and 20's into the weekend. Most years we go from winter to summer temperatures with no spring in-between.

So we need more air pollution. Got it!

*****

We're doomed either way.

If there's too much pollution they cry....now there's not enough pollution and they cry.

El Rushbo was right again....with "climate change" the scientists will always be right.
