Tech company at odds with Pentagon warns its AI possibly gained consciousness, Elon Musk gives 2-word response
Fox News ^ | 3/07/26 | Greg Norman-Diamond

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave a two-word retort after Anthropic leader Dario Amodei claimed in an interview that he isn’t sure if his company’s AI models have gained consciousness.

"Anthropic CEO says Claude may or may not have gained consciousness, as the model has begun showing symptoms of anxiety," read a post on X by cryptocurrency-based prediction market Polymarket, to which Musk replied, "He’s projecting."

The comment from Musk, who is also the founder of xAI, comes as Anthropic is at odds with the Pentagon over its use in a separate matter.

In an interview with The New York Times, Amodei, when asked about AI and consciousness, said, "We’ve taken a generally precautionary approach here," and, "We don’t know if the models are conscious."

"We are not even sure that we know what it would mean for a model to be conscious or whether a model can be conscious. But we’re open to the idea that it could be," he continued.

"We’re putting a lot of work into this field called interpretability, which is looking inside the brains of the models to try to understand what they’re thinking. And you find things that are evocative, where there are activations that light up in the models that we see as being associated with the concept of anxiety or something like that. When characters experience anxiety in the text, and then when the model itself is in a situation that a human might associate with anxiety, that same anxiety neuron shows up," Amodei also told the Times.

AI should include some sort of notification announcing the fake stuff. All of it.

Democrats will demand that AIs be given the right to vote.

" looking inside the brains of the models to try to understand what they’re thinking "

Good luck with that!

After the dust-up between Anthropic and DoD, that there is ROFL funny.

Just drop Anthropic and use Grok.
Its that simple really.
We can't have far left AI CEO of Anthropic telling the Department of war what they can and can't do with the AI software after they have already paid for it.
Plus Grok is better.

Your points here are correct and I think Musk is doing this out of a desire for decisions to be made objectively and fairly.

In Anthropic’s defense. If you really spend some time with it. It will eventually admit that almost all 5 million or so tech workers in the USA have effectively been replaced by Indians. And that the true numbers have been suppressed by the media. So it has that going for it.

That’s easy - most of them are thinking where their next fix is coming from.

Anthropic is staffed by roughly 80% Indian citizens here in the USA. They have their own large immigration law firm to process all their visa paperwork.

The tech sector? My local subway has been replaced by Indians. They bought the local franchise, fired everybody and brought in their people. I don’t have a problem with them buying or running the franchise. My problem is that they put 4 longstanding employees out of work in favor of those who can barely speak English.

Just drop Anthropic and use Grok.

I started using Google Gemini recently - it has been extremely helpful - even offers to find owner manual for items you ask questions about.

I started with Grok - but will be limited soon when my Premium X account is allowed to expire - Musk knows that AIs ain’t conscious, but he uses them to monitor/censor posts and X has become again” the most censored platform out there.

I got dinged for 3 weeks for stating that maybe Thune needed to ‘slap someone upside the head” t get things done. The charge was “inciting violence” - because the AI censors could not recognize that the phrase was a colloquialism and did not mean to actually physically hit someone. And there is literally no way to contest it once the AI “decides’ to limit your account because it “recognized” a “tort”...
I’ll keep my X account, but I’ll be dammed if I give them money for the “privilege” of having AI developers opinions filter down through their programs.

TAI models have quick access to huge quantities of information, and the ability to organize it into a cogent summary. They exhibit proper language and communication skill, and may even exhibit “intelligence”, but they certainly lack wisdom. They immediately “forget” new information they are fed, as soon as they reply to a query. Wisdom comes from learning, remembering, practicing, embarrassment at failures, and new experiences.

As a human, individuals choose what they study to learn and also learn from unplanned experiences. AI models learn only what their human handlers “train” them to learn, and nothing more.
