PHILADELPHIA -- There is an unique and historic way America's 250th birthday will be marked in Philadelphia.
"America's Time Capsule" will be buried on July 4 at Independence National Historical Park near Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
It will remain sealed for 250 years, until 2276.
The America250 Commission, who is behind the project, describes it as a bell jar designed to create an air pocket and help prevent water intrusion underground.
It is expected to include items from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories, as well as contributions from Congress, the Supreme Court and the White House.
States and territories must submit proposed items by March 15, with artifacts due in May. They will each get their own archival box inside the capsule.
A replica of the capsule is set to go on display April 1 at the White House Visitor Center, with a second planned for the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia.

We’ve sure been through a lot in these 250 Years. I’m 82...so I take up almost a third of the time.
Buried time capsules are often destroyed by water or forgotten about. Moisture always wins, plastic becomes brittle, records get misplaced. Best practice is to keep time capsules visible - like a decoration or a piece of furniture. Live with it and remind new generations about it.

This reminds me of a story I read years ago about a midwest high school class who wrote notes and stashed them in the ball finial of the flagpole. I think they were writing to themselves in the future and described what they thought they would be doing with their lives. The time capsule was forgotten about for many decades until the pole was taken down. Many of the boys talked about how they expected to be farmers. I have unsuccessfully searched high and low for this story. If anyone here recalls the story about the time capsule in the flagpole finial, I would be very grateful if you could point me to where I could read the original story again. Thanks.
