I don't know how many "pre-9 AM ET sporting event(s)" have been aired by comparison, but the boys accomplished something exceptional and generational. Good job!

All things told, I think NBC did a pretty good job with this Olympic broadcast. They stayed out of the politics and kept it human. Very happy about that.

Pros playing pros kind of defeats the very essence of the Olympics.
Sadly, there will never be another 1980 win.

But nowadays Canada is the bogeyman the Soviets were in 1980.

But here’s the irony: Most of the “Canadian” players live full-time in the US.

Hype it enough, and they will come (a la Field of Dreams).

I don’t look at it as a national pride thing; it’s all star hockey played by professionals skating for whichever flag they choose. Great, very skilled game!

20 million viewers in a nation of 340 million people isn’t much, but that’s pretty much expected for a sport like hockey that doesn’t attract many casual viewers. Canada probably had the same number of viewers among a population of 41 million.

I don’t know how many “pre-9 AM ET sporting event(s)” have been aired by comparison

Very few, Soccer games, British golf tourneys, F1 Races, former olympic events.

The pre 9 am moniker avoids NFL Football games in Europe, but since those have been on NFL network, they probably did not come close to 20 million viewers.

I don’t understand that logic. Other countries support their athletes essentially making them “professionals”.

those drone shots of the skiers going down the mountain courses were just amazing...the Italian Alps were spectacular. Considering the always annoying time difference, its was all a pretty good show.

I heard that Hockey’s popularity in Canada is waning, especially among the immigrant population, and the white liberals, who see it as the sport for “rednecks”.

There’s probably some truth to that. Interestingly, hockey participation is growing in the U.S. and shrinking in Canada for the same reasons related to demographics and socioeconomics. The sport is migrating back to its 19th century roots as a sport for wealthy prep school elites.

It’s probably related to Canada’s ascendency in soccer. It seems that’s the sport for the liberals there now.

I agree with you, IMO, the Olympics should be the best athletes each country has to offer competing against other to see who is the best.

What difference does it make, I want to see the best athletes competing against each other, men and women.

The US Women’s team was far more physical and faster that I remembered from previous Olympics, it was fun to watch the play hockey.

In the eastern time zone, we watched until time to scoot off to church but the wonder of technology let us finish watching on my discrete phone in church just before the service began.

the only possible ones could be NFL Europe games, overseas tennis, or prior Olympics.
