Deranged transgender gunman Robert Dorgan was cousins with his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, whom he gunned down along with their son at a high school hockey game.

The twisted relationship emerged after records showed the killer had the same name as his murdered ex and her parents, who were also seriously injured in his rampage Monday, according to the Providence Journal.

A deep dive then showed that he and Rhonda were first cousins once removed when they tied the knot in 1992.

At first, the reason for the shooter having the same last name as his ex-wife’s parents was not immediately clear, but the outlet delved into their family tree via the 1950 Census.

Edward Dorgan and his wife, Eva Dorgan, lived in Smithfield, Rhode Island, at the time with their two sons, Raymond Dorgan and Robert J. Dorgan.

Robert J. Dorgan was the father of the trans shooter Robert Dorgan, and Raymond Dorgan fathered Gerald Dorgan, who was a victim in the shooting and remains in critical condition with his wife, Linda.

Gerald and Linda were the parents of Rhonda Dorgan, who would marry the Robert Dorgan who massacred his family before divorcing him in 2021.

There would be no consanguinity there, but social relations and interactons usually dictate how we think and ‘feel’ about things. One of my best friends was adopted, and the parents adopted a completely unrelated boy; they grew up together and would never have had any interest in each other beyond the brotherly-sisterly. It’s how we’re conditioned.

Historically, we just weren’t similarly conditioned against forms of cousin marriage.

Some cultures abstain from certain types of unions even when blood isn’t involved at all; it’s just how the culture developed and what they consider healthy for their society.

Franklin and Eleanor were 5th cousins, once removed. He was from the Hyde Park branch, she from Oyster Bay. Teddy was her uncle, and Franklin’s 5th cousin, “unremoved”.

Once removed means that one of then was the child of the other’s cousin. Genetically, they are as closely related as second cousins. My grandmother was a twin, so my second cousins by her twin are genetically as close as first cousins.

It makes my head hurt. I had a first cousin once removed who had this down pat; I struggle with it. The once removed refers to whether you are in the same generation as the person. Your first cousin’s child is your FCOR. The difference between first and second cousins is that the former share the same grandparents. The latter share the same great grandparents.

isn’t first cousin one removed mean second cousin?

No, but genetically just as close. Second cousins at no remove, share the same great-grandparents. First cousins once removed mean that the parents of one was the cousin of the other. Franklin and Teddy were fifth cousins. Eleanor was Teddy's neice, meaning she was Franklin's fifth cousin once removed. We used to play bridge with a guy named John Alden, and he was a direct descendent of Longfellow's John Alden. His was wife was also an Alden, but a very distant cousin, whom he met at an Alden family affair. Naturally, one could not resist telling him to "speak for yourself, John."

You are being ridiculous. ONCE REMOVED FIRST COUSINS
do not share the same grandparents. They are the next generation. No, I do not have any such links in my family...you write like you do.

Just because the phrase “first cousin” is there it does not make the link close.

Yes, it does for most of us. Some people are purists and insist on the once removed phrase.

“ It’s a mess in genealogy”
Genealogy seems to forget about infidelity.
You know, the mailman or the traveling salesman.
My grandparents told the story about Joe. He lived a mile or so away, in visual range. He would get on his tractor and go plow. Shortly after he left a pickup would pull around and park by the house. The truck was there for an hour or two. They all knew who owned the truck.
Old Joes kids never looked like Joe.

I’ve always said that genealogy is only as true as the women were honest...
