An avid New Jersey outdoor buff slipped off a trail and froze to death while hiking New York’s highest peak with her dog — after it took rescuers more than six hours to find her in bitter single-digit temperatures, officials said Wednesday.
Brianna Mohr, 21 — who posted breathtaking Instagram photos of herself on remote adventures — called 911 while clinging to the side of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks at 3 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
But rescuers couldn’t find Mohr, of Brick, until after 9 p.m., at which point she had died of hypothermia, New York State Police said.
Temperatures in Keene, New York, where the mountain is located, ranged from -8 to 20 degrees that day...

Wow! Thanks for the nostalgic look back.
sad when people go out on adventure unprepared. similar to those in hot places forgetting to bring enough water, or anyone venturing off trail.
all fun, until it’s not.
many stories of people well experienced with their method of adventure yet, it ends up ending their life.
Avid hiker Brianna Mohr, of Brick, ...
Since when did avid mean risky, inexperience and foolish?
So glad her dog survived, he had no choice. She on the other hand did.
Sorry she died, but she would still be alive using a little common sense.
Common Sense isn’t so common anymore.
Summitted it in the Fall, probably mid 80's. Can't imagine going up in the Winter.
An avid hiker?? Apparently not. An avid hiker would be prepared.
RIP Young Lady

So sad
The dog survived unharmed.
Many people get a huge thrill challenging the laws of physics. Some don’t survive.
Not to sound cold but women travelling alone and hiking in the woods alone are taking enormous risks. I’m sorry for her family. They must be devastated. RIP. (Glad her dog was okay.)
I used to guide and mountaineer a lot in the rockies prior to the infantry and rock climb, ice climb etc. All of it. I’m still an avid and experienced outdoorsman. This is tragic but very avoidable. Those temperatures aren’t even that cold without a fire if one had the right gear along and that’s one of the biggest rules, always be geared for what you are trying to do. One thing I’ve noticed over the last several years is people want to display things on social media so they do things that aren’t always the most sensible. I’m not saying that’s the case here, but winter in the mountains is no joke even for experienced mountaineers. Ice crampons, axes, etc for starters would be mandatory even if you don’t plan on climbing on ice. It’s being prepared.
I agree. Seems demonstrably stupid.
At 21 years old, a lot of us were still figuring out what those limits were. Looking back at that age, I probably took similar if not greater risks and could just as easily ended up as a popsicle on a mountainside, alligator food in a swamp, or any other number of unpleasant endings.
I’m on 35 of 46 for the High Peaks and have to admit, I would not take Marcy on in the winter. I wonder which trail she was on?
It was a three dog night, and she only took one.
Now, please take this with a grain of salt. I was Canadian reg force infantry. 3 days cross country. haha!! As I said, please don’t be offended. I love my southern brothers. I just had a laugh when I saw that because I wish. I wish we only went out for 3 days. One ex in northern Manitoba we went down to -60 celcius doing snowmobile insertion training. That was pure survival. -40 celcius is quite normal where we tread and often weeks a time when we weren’t overseas.
My first thought was she wasn’t properly geared, my second thought was why was she out there? It seems a social media thing and not just for the love out the outdoors. Probably wasn’t wearing 3/4 shank boots for ice crampons and no ice axes among other cold weather gear.
In Wyoming each winter a few motorists will die from exposure when their car breaks down off the main roads. Those that stay with their car live. Those that go out into the blizzard to walk a few miles may die. In my field car I always carried food, water, a sleeping bag and blankets.

Mama told her not to come.
