I have called for the full release of the Epstein files.
I have provided a sworn statement of what I know. And just this week, I’ve agreed to appear in person before the committee. But it’s still not enough for Republicans on the House Oversight Committee.
Now, Chairman Comer says he wants cameras, but only behind closed doors. Who benefits from this arrangement? It’s not Epstein’s victims, who deserve justice. Not the public, who deserve the truth. It serves only partisan interests. This is not fact-finding, it’s pure politics.
I will not sit idly as they use me as a prop in a closed-door kangaroo court by a Republican Party running scared. If they want answers, let’s stop the games & do this the right way: in a public hearing, where the American people can see for themselves what this is really about.

It's a great question, especially since I'm pretty certain everyone interested in the Epstein controversy would much prefer public testimony, even if they do something completely private, separately.
After thinking about it quite a bit, my best guess is that they simply don't want to draw a lot of additional attention to the Epstein matter, as a public hearing most certainly would. As in, blockbuster ratings. That would be in contrast to Trump's latest request is that it all be tossed into the rearview, which could be factoring into it.
They have always counted on testifying last so they could hear what everyone else has to say. He knows it’s a perjury trap, and he can’t lie as effectively if he doesn’t know what everyone else has said.

Comer has promised that the entire video of the hearing and a complete transcript of it will be released so I don’t know why it shouldn’t be public to begin with.

Just so he can stretch it out and make it a show, while being obtuse.
That tiny discrepancy is what led to my theory on why they don't want it live, as the only major difference between the two, is the blockbuster ratings that the live testimony would draw. Ergo, they only major thing gained by it not being live, is that much fewer people will see it, or be interested. That wouldn't be that far fetched, either, considering who all may want this to end sooner, than later.
